Royal Caribbean International has named Swedish mariner, Karin Stahre-Janson, captain of Monarch of the Seas, making her the first female captain in the line's 21-ship fleet and the first woman in the industry to command a major cruise ship.

(Brits will notice an uncanny resemblance to the camp TV personality, Julian Clary).

As the Captain of Monarch of the Seas, Captain Stahre-Janson is responsible for the safe navigation of a ship that is 880 feet long, 106 feet wide, has 14 guest decks and routinely carries 2,400 guests and 850 crew members.

Captain Stahre-Janson recently completed her first tour of duty as captain of the Los Angeles-based ship, which sails three- and four-night cruises to San Diego, Catalina and Ensenada, Mexico. She resumes her command in August.

Prior to joining Royal Caribbean, Captain Stahre-Janson worked for nine years in cargo shipping, primarily on petroleum and chemical tankers, where, ultimately, she served as Chief Officer.

Captain Stahre-Janson has been an officer on Royal Caribbean's ships since 1997, when she joined the company. Starting out as First Officer on Viking Serenade and Nordic Empress, she became Chief Officer while on Vision of the Seas and continued that role on Radiance of the Seas. Adding still another stripe, she was named Staff Captain on Brilliance of the Seas, and also served in that capacity on Serenade of the Seas and Majesty of the Seas.

"We are tremendously proud and pleased by Captain Stahre-Janson's promotion," said Adam Goldstein, president of Royal Caribbean International. "This is historic news - for our company and the entire cruise industry - and a tremendous inspiration for women in any line of work, particularly a maritime career."

A lifelong sailor, Captain Stahre-Janson graduated from the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden with a bachelor's degree in Nautical Science. She subsequently obtained her Unlimited Masters License enabling her to command virtually any ship of any size.

A native of Stromstad, Sweden, a town on the Nordic country's west coast, Captain Stahre-Janson learned to sail from her parents at the age of seven in a small boat given to her by her parents. Growing up, she attended sailing camp, taught sailing and competitively raced tall ships.

"I hope my achievements can serve as an example to young women around the world and inspire them to work toward their dreams - no matter how unusual they may be," said Captain Stahre-Janson.

Malcolm thank goodness her name is not Fanny !

Good on her and LONG overdue, I remember P&Os first female deck cadets back in the 80s, hopefully they too will make progress soon.

I wonder if she will wear one of those awful wollen black wrap around skirts on formal occasions. And will she wear those awful little hats or a proper one ?

Breton is currently a 'Staff Captain', not the Master.

I hope they give Ms Karin Stahre-Janson easy ports to park the ship at. I notice that RCI have not given her a new ship to command or a 'long' ship.

Right Malcolm about Staff Captain.
And Karin is Mrs, since she is married to a Captain on a tanker.

I know you are wanting some to jump here but the pilot will do the 'parking'. As is so obvious from the mishaps over the years it is the male species that needs assistance with 'parking'.

Hi All

When P&O / OCL owned the Thames sailing barge ' Will ' she had a lady Captain.

Her name was Sue Harrison and she with a partner bought the barge when it was sold by P&O in about 1999.

Sue obtained her masters certificate in 1979 and took command of the Will in 1982

The barge was used by the Directors of P&O for entertaining.

It is now berthed at St Katharines Dock, London.

It is used as a restaurant and can be chartered for cruising dinner parties on the river Thames.

I have read that the Soviet passenger ship Ivan Franco had a female captain at one time as well as some MSC ships. I am not sure if the MSC ships were cruise ships. It seems that Ms. Strahe-Janson is the 1st captain of a large cruise/passenger ship.
I agree that it is about time and no jokes about woman 'drivers' My grandmother was a safer (and faster) driver than most men of her generation.

I am a bit surprised that she is the first one - I met several femal officers aboard passenger ships. I know about at least two female captains if we include river vessels.

First of all this old news.
Karin was promoted to Master already March 1, when I sent her my congratulations.
According to Adam Goldstein the reason for delay was:
"Roland, We were working with USA Today on an exclusive piece in the US market. We could not put out our official press release until that story was published.
Best regards,
Adam"

I have sailed with Karin many times, when she was OF1, OFC and SCPT and I can assure everyone that she is an excellent sailor and will be a good Master.

Of course they do

Also Captain Allison Ross became the first woman accepted in the Maryland Pilots Association, and has been piloting the Chesapeake Bay for ten years.

Such things seem to be who you know and who you are in some places.

And now Venice has it's first female Gondolier! I saw this piece on CNN.com and I am not sure if it is 'new' news or just a planted item for a slow news day.

It's news from the beginning of April, so not too old and I suppose topical still. She actually first applied in 1999, here's an old BBC report. She still hasn't passed the steering test though and has apparently failed it 3 times.

The Columbia River Bar, one of the toughest piloting assignments in the world has one, and possibly two female pilots. As Pam mentioned, there are several on the Chesapeake Bay as well.

Get over it Malcom! Parallel parking is no longer a demonstration of manhood..or anything else for that matter!
