Does anyone know why HAL decided to pull the Zaandam, indeed it's presence in general, from Port Canaveral? Now that we have an idea what they're doing for '08-'09, it seems clear that they are not returning to PC any time soon. Were they not doing well there? Were there a lot of complaints from the HAL faithful regarding the port's distance from MCO?

I really have no idea why HAL pulled out of PC, but in our case, we wouldn't want to leave from there as we have to fly into either Tampa or Orlando and then it's a long drive to get to the port.

It's fine for people who live in the area or who can drive to the port but for anyone having to fly, especially a long distance, it just wasn't feasable. It's much easier to fly to FLL or Tampa and only have a 15-20 mins. drive to the port.

HAL has also pulled out of Norwalk - not an easy place for most to get to.

What is MCO???

I could totally understand it being way too far from Tampa. That would be almost a two-and-a-half-hour ride. But it's a shame that it's 40 or so minutes from Orlando. I can understand the folks flying in wouldn't want to sit on a bus that long. But personally, that's a breeze. It's easier than 1.5 hours to Tampa or 3.5 hours to FLL by car.

May be for you and people living in the area, but for me and I am sure others flying in from Canada and the US, more planes fly to Tampa and FLL.

Same for Norwalk - I would have had to change planes 3 times just to get there from Toronto and this is something I'd never do. If it's not a direct, non-stop flight, I won't take it.

I was on one of the earlier Zaandam cruises from PC. While speaking to one of the officers he said that almost as soon as HAL comitted to Port Canaveral they realized it was a mistake.

Basically, PC was just too far from Half Moon Cay to allow for more than just a brief stop there. Since it was the final port on the itnerary, after, I believe, two full days at sea, they could only stop there until very early afternoon if they were to return to PC ontime. As expected, passengers quickly began complaining about the very short call.

It seems that because of this, HAL already decided not to renew its contract with PC long before the first one even expired.

I was told the reason HAL pulled out of Norfolk was not because of popularity of the cruises. It was because it was so terribly difficult to maintain the schedule due to rough weather and winds. The MAASDAM often ran behind schedule and the turn-arounds were very difficult for crew and unhappy pax waiting to board a late arriving liner. You can just imagine the PR problems.

It's not uncommon to have to travel a bit from the airport to the pier.EG. London to Harwich and Santiago to Valpariso which where 2 hours+ bus rides. And these where after long flights.Especially Chile. I actually enjoyed seeing the countryside in each country.

Maybe if they were to put a Vista-class up here, it might work out better. They were built for "speed" anyway (well, more speed than a R-class vessel).
