I am sure that everyone recongnizes the catchy song with the driving drum beat that Royal Caribbean has been using in commercials and on its web site. The song is entitled "Lust for Life" and it was originally released in 1977 by Iggy Pop.

While the title and music seemingly make it a great choice for Royal Caribbean, if they played the song past the drum intro, I am sure that some cruisers might be suprised by the lyrics...

"Lust For Life"

Here comes Johnny Yen again
With the liquor and drugs
And a flesh machine
He's gonna do another strip tease

Hey man, where'd you get that lotion?
I've been hurting since I bought the gimmick
About something called love
Yeah, something called love
Well, that's like hypnotising chickens

Well, I'm just a modern guy
Of course, I've had it in the ear before
'Cause of a lust for life
'Cause of a lust for life

I'm worth a million in prizes
With my torture film
Drive a G.T.O.
Wear a uniform
All on government loan

I'm worth a million in prizes
Yeah, I'm through with sleeping on the sidewalk
No more beating my brains
No more beating my brains
With the liquor and drugs
With the liquor and drugs

Well, I'm just a modern guy
Of course, I've had it in my ear before
'Cause, of a lust for life (lust for life)
'Cause of a lust for life (lust for life, oooo)
I've got a lust for life (oooh)
Got a lust for life (oooh)
Oh, a lust for life (oooh)
Oh, a lust for life (oooh)
A lust for life (oooh)
I got a lust for life (oooh)
Got a lust for life

Well, I'm just a modern guy
Of course, I've had it in my ear before
'Cause I've a lust for life
'Cause I've a lust for life.

Well, here comes Johnny Yen again
With the liquor and drugs
And a flesh machine
I know he's gonna do another strip tease

Hey man, where'd ya get that lotion?
Your skin starts itching once you buy the gimmick
About something called love
Oh Love, love, love
Well, that's like hypnotising chickens.

Well, I'm just a modern guy
Of course, I've had it in the ear before
And I've a lust for life (lust for life)
'Cause I've a lust for life (lust for life)
Got a lust for life
Yeah, a lust for life
I got a lust for life
Oh, a lust for life
Got a lust for life
Yeah a lust for life
I got a lust for life
Lust for life [repeat and fade]

I found it to be a very surprising choice as here, in the UK, it is perhaps most associated with the movie, Trainspotting, which is an incredibly gritty and graphic film about heroin addicts.

Yes, "Trainspotting" is a pretty grim movie, but I think only a cult following of Ewen McGregor is even familiar with it in the US. I don't know if Royal Caribbean does any TV adverts in the UK, but if so, do they use the same music? That song is almost as synonymous here with RCI as "Ain't We Got Fun" used to be with Carnival!

I caught a Carnival TV spot yesterday, and "Ain't We got Fun" was back...minus Kathy Lee. Actually she did a good job belting it out. This version seems a mite tepid.

Joe; Where DID you get those lyrics?

They use the track in the UK. Certainly on the UK website, the brochure's DVD and I've heard it pounding on the TV adverts also.

I bought the Trainspotting soundtrack to get the song years ago. The lyrics aren’t what you’d expect, nor would I associate them with the line as such. But the tune is catchy, and for better or worse, its pretty firmly entrenched as the theme music of the line. The state-side ads avoid playing the questionable lyrics.

Iggy Pop does seem to be having something of a revival these days, many reasons why that could be, but I wouldn’t be shocked that the RCI ads have helped in some small part.

In the end, state-side at least, people don’t seem to be attaching any negative connotations to the music and such. For my part, I have the tune on my USB drive, and play it in my car a fair amount.

I, too was surprised when I first heard RCI use "Lust for Life" as the first thing I thought of was TRAINSPOTTING...and while it is a very good movie...it is graphic, gritty and disturbing.

Maybe subliminally that's why so many people are jumping off ships these days LOL

Does anyone know what is the song that P&O are using for the Ventura site?

They're using All Saints' 'True Shores' for the main website and on a DVD about P&O in general. I think it's pretty good, and even has some hint of applicability, but I'd love to know what the Ventura music is. I suspect that it's something really cheesy, as they only use the introduction.
