Aker Yards and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. have reached an understanding regarding the basis on which Royal Caribbean will order a fourth ship in the Freedom class -- currently the world's largest cruise ship. The vessel would be delivered in the second half of 2011. The placement of the order is still subject to a number of conditions, including board approval and finalization of terms and conditions.

Aker Yards, has previously delivered two of these record breaking cruise ships, and will deliver the third ship in April this year from its yard in Turku. This fourth vessel is scheduled to be delivered second half 2011.

The Freedom class vessels will be 126 feet by 1,112 feet (38.6 meters by 339 meters), and will stand 18 decks high. Their gross tonnage is 158.000. The ships will carry 3,600 guests, and 1,400 crewmembers.

If RCI are going to clone another Freedom Class I vote that it be called Vista of the Seas

This is interesting, not that RCI will order another Freedom-class because they are very popular but the name. I looked up synonyms for Freedom and I got Liberty, Independence and Sovereignty.
After all RCI might end up recycling the Sovereign of the Seas name.

As RCI builds more ships, I don't doubt we will see a little re-cycling of past names. Sovereign of the Seas is one name that I am sure will be used again.

I was wondering is this the ship that there was rumors about a few months ago? To be coming out between the Genesis ships? At that point I don't think they said it was a Freedom class, but something like it. Or is this a different ship? I tried to find that tread on that ship from a few months back but couldn't.

Nevermind, I found the thread I was looking for here. I guess it is the same ship.

OK but here is the interesting one.where do all these ships go ?

Genesis 1 & 2 - Caribbean
Freedom 1& 2 - Caribbean
Freedom 3 & 4 - Med ?
Voyager 1 & 2 Caribbean
Voyager 3 West Coast
Voyager 4 west Coast / Asia
Voyager 5 Med or Uk / Baltic

Then you still have all the Radiance and Vision class.

Obviously the last 2 Sovereigns and a Vision or 2 will be transffered to Pullmantuur, perhaps a Vision to the new French outfit. Pullmatuur could then get rid of a couple of clonkers. The French operation grows. RCI put a ship in Asia/Aussie full time.

Could be interesting times, Costa will have to do better than their older ships in Asia to compete which I suspect is half the problem anyway.

I had thought, until I learned they were already cutting steel for Genesis 2, that they might use a forth freedom class to allow for refinement of the Genesis design. In effect, I think they still will, just between a second and third Genesis.

And as before, I think the Genesis class will spur higher booking across the entire line, and a cheaper, more easily deployed Freedom class will gain from that.

As most here seem to figure, and as I've been noting on my own site, I don't see the last of the Sovereign class ships being long for service with RCI.

I think we now have to consider how soon word of the first Vision class being sent to another fleet will come. I can see two or three Vision class ships being moved to sister fleets, with the rest being cycled through the short-cruise and emerging markets.

Once the SOVEREIGN and VISION classes ships leave the fleet, RCI will be left with post-panamax ships. I wonder if RCI has plans to build some panamax ships?

Radiance, Serenade, Brilliance, and Jewel are all Panamax ships. Remember this may not be an issue for too long because Panama is currently working to enlarge the canal locks for larger ships. These four should be enough for RCI until the expansion is complete.

I think that the two remaining Sovereign class ships will be gone by 2010 with one leaving on 09 and the remaining ship in 2010. I see the Vision class going soon after leaving just the larger ships in the fleet. I also see a fifth and final Freedom class being built in 2011. After that who knows what RCI will come up with. Will there be a need for a third Genesis? I guess time will tell. Should be interesting to say the least.

I've heard rumors from a friend onboard Liberty that the new ship will be called Justice of the seas!

Thanks for the info Recab. I too like the Sovereign name but when built it was the largest and first of it's class. This 4th Freedom class should not have that name. I think the first Genesis ship should be called...................

Sovereign of the Seas!

However, RCI is in the new habit of having a contest to pick the name. I think they be looking for suggestions but decide within the company.

Justice of the Seas. Name for a war ship, not for a cruise one.

I just tried going to the royal caribbean site to enter in the contest, but i guess they closed it out to new entries. I was thinking about entering in:

Pioneer of the Seas
Discoverer of the Seas
Leader of the Seas

Brian

PIONEER has already been done by at least two people on here (I think Carlos beat me to it), so I wouldn't waste a chance on that one. (I assume the first person to submit the winning name wins.)

My other choice was LEVIATHAN OF THE SEAS, mostly as an homage to the late Frank Braynard who had just passed away when the contest started.

The contest for naming the Genesis closed on the last day of February. They will start in about a week or two releasing the finalist names. They are supposed to announce the winning names of both Genesis ships before the end of May.

Oh, didn't even realize that.

I assume I won't win as I can't imagine them choosing LEVIATHAN (though I love it) and I think Carlos has got me beaten on PIONEER (and for all I know he is not the only one).

It would be fun to win though. Standing on the deck of another ship as you enter port and you can point to the biggest ship in the world and say, "I named that...!"

The two remaining Soverign ships will most likely be transferred to Pullman tour but there are no plans to move the Vision class ships for many years.
The oldest Vi class ship is only 13 years so she has still has about 7 years to go in RCI.
Most likely the ship to the French and German brands will be from Celebrity when they get the newbuilds.

Don't forget that RCI has been slowly establishing its brand in Australia and NZ. Perhaps some of the vision class ships will be positioned in that market year round to compete with Princess/P&O.

How about "Frontier of the Seas" for the fourth freedom-class ship?

"Establishing". Have you forgotten that it is not so many years since LG did her "Royal Journeys" down under?

Whilst I'd love to see some competition from RCI for P&O downunder, there is a massive difference between a short Summer season and establishing a full presence down here.

The closest we may get is RCI positioning a ship in Asia for the northern summer and Sydney for the southern summer but that is probably a couple of years away still.
