Some companies seem to get this really wrong. IMHO. Recently:

Prince Albert II - Silver what ?
Quest for Adventure - Verb.
Ruby Princess (gay slang for Rupert and Ruby does just not sound right, Regal would be fine))
Most of the Pullmantur names (they are just lazy)

Please cruise lines note (unless you are Russian)

Female names please.
Naming after cities or countries without a "Spirit of...." type thing etc to be discouraged (can you imagine Mumbai or Johannesburg. If you are going to use a country name then it had better be a "ship of state".
Keep them short
Relevent (no point calling one after Mt Kilimanyaro!)
Preferably nautical - ish.
One can only have so many Independences of anything or something Freedom.
Numbers are a cop out.
Blokes launching ships is not good (see Pride of Hawaii)
Logos painted on ships sides suck - all it means is your funnel colours don't work as no one knows them.
Website addresses on ships suck - bar EasyCruise.
All your ships in the fleet should follow the same colour schemes externally and the same naming theme and be relevent to your target market (all Spanish lines take note).
When painting a name on make sure it looks good the way you do it (Princess R ships bows).
Beware other translations (Blu de France in German for instance - but even in French why Blu ? What next Rouge?)

Qudos to :
Oceania Cruises, Insignia, Nautica, Regatta - great.
Cunard Queens.
RCI
Celebrity (except that the new ships appear to be all white - ?)
HAL except Eurodam (I mean....)
Aida

Mike,

I cannot fully agree about AIDA as unfortunately, AIDA, its former sister brand A-Rosa (now operating riverboats only - headed by AIDA's former CEO) and TUI Cruises (led by another former AIDA executive) tend to use confusingly similar names for their ships.

Examples: "A-Rosa Bella" and "AIDAbella", "A-Rosa Luna" and "AIDAluna" and most recently "A-Rosa Aqua" and "TUI Aqua" (although the latter is not yet confirmed.

Best,

Raoul

I always like astronomical names. Not planets, they are in turn named for gods and godesses. But (and I know it has been done) "Aldeberan, Acturus, and even Sirius" all have nice rings to them. Then specific galaxies have names that could ring. And I doubt if anyone's fleet will become large enough to require some of the complex and possibly ocult names now applied to new discoveries, such as "NGC5218" or similar.

Greek mythology is not a bad source for ship names.
A name of a recently built ships that I like a lot is Maria S. Merian. (see also here) It is a bit long (the short form is just 'Merian') but it is stylish and certainly original.

I have to agree, Cambodge.

I really like Celebrity's astronomical names: Meridian, Horizon, Zenith, Galaxy, Mercury, Constellation, Solstice, Equinox, Eclipse!

I hope they will "recycle" "Meridian" for one of their upcoming "Solstice"-class vessels. "Zodiac" sounds nice, as well (even though it could been seen as having an astrological touch).

As for star's name, what about Capella, Antares, Polaris, Pollux, Regulus (for a smaller ship ) or Spica?

Best,

Raoul

Just goes to show a little imagination and you get some really good names. Love the Star names, they actually have a romantic sort of aspect to them.

Mike SA...Remember that Russians ship names are "male." Also, Italian and French ship names are "male" as well. I am sure there are other countries/languages which also have ships in the male gender.

Celebrity's names were fine, until they stuck 'Celebrity' in front of all of them.

Oceania's are the best imo, short & to the point. I don't particularly like names which incorporate the name of the company, Norewgian x, Carnival x, x Princess and so on - one way to ensure people forget which ship they were on. Too many do this now. [OK for small fleets, 2 or 3 ships]

Pollux is a common name for many types of vessels, tugs, cargo ships, containers etc but the best well known must be this one.

PAII is a bit of a mouthful, but Quest for Adventure reminds me of Chris Bonington; I like it and think it goes hand in hand with her fleetmate.

Sun, Star, Dawn, Sky .. all so boring and overused, no imagination, so many names could be used but we see these over and over.

I don't think men should name ships either; but what about in countries where ships are masculine? I might think differently then. The most ridculous names of late imo are PAII [but the abbreviation might take over and grow] and Eurodam, which never will grow on me, only Dollardam could be worse.

Pam

Russians have always used male names - probably why they lost the cold war !!

I think it was La France and La Normandie, not Le wasn't it ?

Again some German ships have been female. But even is they have a male name don't they still call it she ? Perhaps someone can advise as I am sure I have heard that way - unless of course it was a warship. Aida's ships are definately female unless it is a ship in drag ? (in which case it opens up a whole new market for them).

A.

La France and la Normandie is respectively the country and the region. ( Le) France and (Le) Normandie were the ships.

I thought that for example the ship was "der" Vaterland, while the noun was (das) Vaterland.

That would be bottom of the heap, they could not stoop that far.

I can't help thinking that P&O have got it just about right:

Oriana; Arcadia; Oceana; Aurora; Ventura. Good names, a couple of them being quite old. I was surprised to learn that there was a P&O Arcadia in the 19th century.

It would be good to re-use some of the orient line names: Orsova or Orontes, say.

Instead of "Blu de France", why can't we see another "Ile de France"?
