Have heard that Mr Aponte / MSC is prepared to invest $100 million in Alitalia, however this is only for the pax service he does not want the cargo division.

Well the purchase may float his boat for him but may well sink his ships !

Personally I would not be walking away from this deal - I would be running.

Was he not part of the consortium which pulled out yesterday? [Thurs] The unions refused to accept the plans. Rumour is the parties knew the deal wouldn't be accepted anyway..

Now back to square one and been given 10 days before they lose their operators license [but deadlines seem to come and go with Alitalia]. No chance of survival as who on earth is going to be brave enough to book a ticket now?

All the unions with the exception of the pilots and cabin crew have signed the agreement, this is reminding me to much of Eastern.

Yes, forward bookings appear to have pretty much stopped.

Yesterday, AZ is reported to have cancelled 20-30 flights from Rome, apparently to Milan and similar destinations. AZ denied that it is short of fuel at the moment, but was coy about the reason for the cancellations. It seems very possible that they were because there were no virtually no bookings for the flights!

The train did a roaring business, though.

This is not the case. Only three out of AZ's nine unions have signed the agreement. A fourth, which I think was one of those which had originally provisionally signed up to the plan, changed its mind and is now one of the opponents. They also include the flight crew and cabin crew.

There is a rumour this morning that the cabin crew union has now changed its mind and is conditionally accepting the buyers' plan. The condition: no pay cuts. They are still living in cloud cuckoo land.

Are'nt those usually the highest paid employees other than management which is usually not part of the union.

It seems that they are slitting their own wrists by not going along w/the plan.

Thank you for correcting me, I was under the impression that it was just the pilots and cabin crew holding out. After doing a little digging I find that you are correct, thank you again.

But as you say, they are living in cuckoo land.

Can Air One step right in if AZ is grounded ?

Why would Mr Aponte wan't to get involved in this mess ?

I think Mr Aponte love some risk. When he bought Lauro years ago Lauro was nothing more then a mess of old ships not so trust worthy back ground. He turn it around and the line now MSC Cruise Line is the biggest independent cruise line in Europe.
Maybe he and the other investors cane do the same with Alitalia. Personally i think Alitalia is going the same way as Swissair and Sabena.

Greetings Ben.

And who would have thought 10 years ago that MSC would be bigger than either Cunard or P&O ?

True, let the "old" AZ die and have a new AZ rise in it's place.

True, but this is what happens when someone brings new products into the market, yes there is still some of the older tonnage floating around but MSC is churning out new ships and continent is rewarding them.

A personal suspicion about (almost) the whole consortium, based on no real facts except the knowledge that this is Italy.

The consortium is primarily composed of Berlusconi's "mates". While he is in power, he has the ability to swing a lot of things their way. Collectively, I suspect that Berlusconi could make sure that they make at least an extra €1bn during his term of office - if they will help him out by "investing" €1bn in AZ.

I think that the only exception to this may be the last member of the consortium, Intesa San Paolo. They are the bank that rescued Air One. Remember that part of the plan was that Air One and AZ would basically be merged, and they would no longer be competing with each other. That would protect Intesa San Paolo's investment.

All this is guesswork, but I offer it FWIW.

Airlines and cruiselines don't mix well historically - I seem to remember Cunard tried (not a good experience for them), Royal Cruise Line thought about it even building a ship that took exactly 1 jumbo full of pax, Carnival tried (also not a huge success) so not a good track record.

Pullmantur is also in the air game of course but I don't think the 2 are now part of the same company, the tour and airline part was not included in the deal with RCI ?
