Carnival has a new advertising campaign Fun for All All for Fun I happen to like it. I was wondering what you think.

It's worse than Royal Caribbean's new ad campaign. Would not even know it was about a cruise line if I didn't catch the last two or three seconds. Bad. Real bad.

I think they need to show a ship-it is after all a cruise line. I liked the Carnival commercials w/the collage of onboard pics.

IMO Carnival should stick w/those commercials from a few years ago or include images of ships in new commercials-including their best looking ship-the upcoming Carnival Dream.

Wow, I think that is the most awful ad I have seen in a long time. It doesn't connect with ships at all, and left me thinking "so what?"

Very surreal.

I bet 95% of viewers will fail to remember that the advert is for a cruise line.

I guess I disagree with all of these objections....I think it's quite good. It uses somewhat of a subliminal message of FUN and then ties it together with a cruise line. You can't help watching these commercials and smile just a little. They are trying to imply that if you go on a Carnival Cruise you can expect a Fun vacation, excitement, etc.

And when someone has to sit here and explain the commercial, then the marketing agency made a mistake.

Different explaining the commercial to shippys

The average person who knows nothing about cruises or cruise ships will be intrigued by the commercial

I agree with LeBarryboat on this one. This is a great commercial and a great idea. The average person will find this intruging. When you see it on T.V. all of you will see it was a great commercial.

I have seen the commercial on TV and it's not any better. Also, some posters on other cruise boards have asked their friends to watch the commercial and their response was "What was that"? Again, if you have to explain a commercial, then it has failed.

Not necessarily if you have to explain the commercial you probably weren't paying attention to the commercial. You have to get understand it and you should because you guys love cruising. I understood it very well. Its about having fun and the fun you will wave on Carnival.

Honestly I don't see why anyone would have trouble understanding these comercials.
I understood it perfectly. The message it send to me it that Carnival is a fun slightly out of the ordinary cruise line. I think even non ship geeks would have to be able to understand that, or maybe I am giving the average person to much credit.

The commercial ends with this that says the commercial is from Carnival Cruise lines:

...and the sound of a ships horn doesnt hurt. There's a pinata, people having fun, and the track playing in the background "I don’t want to work, i just want to bang on the drum all day". I would say that if you have to have the commercial expalined to you, that you're a bit daft.

I am guessing perhaps this poster (teenage girl/ boy) just got his/ her first job with a cruise line (reservations)...and is excited to be wokring in an industry he loves (like we all do/ once did).

Perhaps he over time he will be come jaded and cynical as the industry changes/ evolves - but for now - perhaps it's innocnet (naive) excitement.

My partner and I were just watching TV and the new Carnival ad came on. It was the one with the giant pinata. Anyway after it played I asked him what he thought of it. He thought it was totally lame and in no way enticed him to book a cruise. This coming from an average American consumer who is not involved in any way with the cruise industry. Of course I know my partner doesn't speak for everyone, but I tend to agree with him. Watching a huge crowd of people gathered in a vacant parking lot in Philadelphia, waiting for this giant pinata to be broken apart, does not make me think of taking a vacation or booking a cruise. As far as I'm concerned the ad is a failure.

Call me traditional, but I would rather see an ad that shows people enjoying a beautiful ship at sea, watching the sunset and listening to music on the stern while enjoying great conversation. The ship would be far off in the distance, sailing into the sunset and the camera would zoom in on this group sitting on the aft deck laughing and talking about what they did in port that day. All the while there would be soft music playing by a trio and other passengers around enjoying conversation and the music. Now that would put me in the mood to book a cruise!

The reason you may not understand the commercial is because Carnival is an out of the fray cruise line. They still do the ship commercials but they are experimenting to see what works and what doesn't and I think this commercial is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then some I LOVE IT WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! GO CARNIVAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Believe me I get it. I'm not an imbecile. I just don't think it's very good.

As for Carnival being an "out of the fray" cruise line, well keep telling yourself that. They are as mainstream "in the fray" as it gets.

It's cute you like Carnival so much, but perhaps you should broaden your horizons. In time (I'm assuming you are very young) you will.

You can all go after me and say I am a pot stirer but I gotta let it out. I have been on this board since 1999...I tend to lurk since I don't want to get into the sometimes heated debates over cruise ships!!!! Though I may have indulged in the past but as of lately I like to lay low.

Anyway I feel that this person "The Big CC" is doing their best to start some sort of an arguement. Maybe its the teacher in me! But I sense some bullying. This is one of three posts in the last week that seem to keep pushing the fact of how Carnival is light years ahead of the competition when the posters knows (and was a part of) the numerous debates we have had on here about the top two cruise line's and their competitive place in the modern cruise industry.

"Big C" we all have are cruise lines of preference and Carnival is a great cruise line and serves its purpose of providing a great cruise at great values. They also were the first line to market their product succesfully in TV ads and with their great slogan "The Fun Ships". To learn about cruise line marketing and the story of Carnival and the early cruise industry I suggest the book: "Selling the Sea" by Bob Dickinson and Andy Vladimir - if you have not read that already.

I like Carnival myself! I love all cruises except the ones I am not on! But I ask that you not bully this is a great online cruise community if you want to partake in that behavior go visit cruise critic. They thrive on that there.

In regards to the commercial its not that bad. I was at a New Years Eve party and the commercial came on and people started to sing with it! The song is catchy and recognizable that is why I like it but I still think IMO they need to show their ships! This goes for all lines. Carnival has vibrant ship's with larges atriums, RCI could show a little less of the rockwall and wow people with their indoor promonade. When I was a travel agent full time people always wanted to know how their ship looked, especially new cruisers. They would ask me if I had brochures just on the ship. Very few lines published such..Costa did, Carnival had a funship photobook at one time and RCI and Celeb had a lovely hardcover book but they never updated it. I guess they figure people will go online these days.

Again sorry if I upset anyone.

First of all I am not starting anything I am just posting my own opinion.

Second of all I think its good to talk about the top two cruise lines and their competitiveness because its important i think to distigush them with our own personal veiws.

I don't think Carnival is all great and perfect they have alot to work on as a cruise line. I am not a bully I just have my preferences. I think we can agree to disagree. Calling me a bully is not loving. We are a family here at this great community lets stop the fighting and the name calling. I love Travelpage its my home away from home and I would hate for our family here to be divided.

I have to agree. Even though the intent of the commercials message is easily understood, it is none the less a bad (rather ugly) commercial, especially since it was filmed in an abandoned dirt lot. Maybe if they had filmed it in a tree-filled open park (Central Park NY) or near the beach (Miami or Port Everglades) with one of their ships passing by in the background? The departing aerial shot is particulalry unappealing.

I suppose the adverts should be judged as a whole series. Never the less, I agree with Ernie, showing a ship and the onboard activities would impress me more.

The big two lines are keen to sell an 'experiences' rather than ships. The fact that carnival's 'fun' and RCI's 'adventure' take place afloat is almost secondary to their approach.

I'm intrigued by all of your valid responses to these ads. They definitely drew me in and engaged me but when I saw it was for Carnival my only thought was "Why?"

Watching the pinata piece I remembered hearing news stories about this. Even then I wondered why Carnival would be behind building the "world's largest pinata". Do you suppose they named it Oasis of the Pinatas?

Here's a news story on the making of:

Cheers!
