From Disney Cruise Line:

PAPENBURG, GERMANY (March 2, 2009) – Disney Cruise Line began construction on two new ships today with a steel cutting ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Scheduled for completion in 2011 and 2012, the new ocean liners will further advance the company’s one-of-a-kind guest experience and create more family cruise options with a brand guests know and trust.

“When we launched our business in 1998, we recognized a need in the marketplace for a cruise experience created just for families,” said Karl L. Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations. “With these new ships, we are continuing to build upon that vision of providing more families with an unforgettable cruise vacation and the chance to explore new destinations with Disney.”

The first piece of steel cut for the new ships was part of the art deco inspired scrollwork that will grace the bow of the ships. Similar to the scrollwork on the Disney Cruise Line ships, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the intricate pattern is reminiscent of the classic ocean liners of the 1930s, designed to reflect the glamour of the golden age of cruising with added touches of Disney whimsy, such as the Mickey Mouse medallion in the center of the design.

Since finalizing a contract with the Meyer Werft shipyard to build the two new ships, Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering have created a truly distinctive design for the new ships. Over the next few years, construction will continue, bringing the design to reality. The design details will be unveiled at a later date.

Holz noted that the fleet expansion will more than double the passenger capacity for Disney Cruise Line. Each ship will have 1,250 staterooms and will weigh 128,000 tons. Similar to the existing ships, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the new ships will be purpose built with families in mind, with specially designed areas and activities for each member of the family to allow for both quality time together and wonderful individual experiences. The focus is to provide a setting where families can reconnect, adults can recharge and kids can immerse themselves in worlds of fantasy only Disney can create.

Known for bringing family travel to the cruise market, Disney continues to be a leader in the industry and was recently named the top large cruise ship experience by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine in the 9th annual “Reader’s Cruise Poll.” The Disney Wonder, which sails three- and four-night cruises to The Bahamas, was ranked as the No. 1 cruise ship in the “Large Ship” category. The Disney Magic was also ranked in the top five cruise experiences overall. The Disney Magic primarily sails seven-night cruises to the eastern and western Caribbean and, beginning in the spring of 2010, will embark on a season of limited itineraries exploring Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

I am really curious about the exterior design of these two ships. The Disney Magic and Wonder were two of the best looking ships of the last 15-years and hopefully these larger ships will be equally attractive.

Thanks for the rendering. Last time I saw it I thought the original pair were far better looking and I still think that.

Finally the construction is started. Looks like ages before this would happen. They are handsome vessels, leaning heavily on the first pair. But thats alright Magic and Wonder are with out doubt unique vessels.

Reading the press statement, it's funny to see that Disney claims more or less that they are building the vessels by them self and not the yard. As with there attractions in there parks they do to. Hope the cooperation between Meyer and Disney is smoother then with Fincantiere.

Some day my ship will come
Greetings Ben.

Has anyone sailed on either of the Disney ships? I think that they are among the best looking modern ships out there. I sailed in tandem with one recently while I was on Eurodam. It really did look like a classic liner on the horizon.

I would like to try them out, even for 3 days, just to experience the ship. It is said that there are enough adult only areas to allow you to enjoy the ship & get away from Disney & the kids. Their private island looks good too!

Graham.

I have sailed on them twice. I have been on 25 cruises and I can say that my two times onboard offered me a great cruise. I only sailed on the Wonder but I know the Magic is similiar. I found the decor and ship's hardware of fine quality. As with Disney products the ship was spotless. The shows, while all Disney themed, I feel are the best at sea in terms of professionalism - definately on par with Broadway and being someone from the NYC area I feel I can make that comparison. Even their deck parties were better complete with fireworks at sea! I also thought the food was good! I like the fact that little extras are included like soft drinks and that the adult alternative dining is only $10 per person - I know the cruise is pricey but it is worth it.

I will say I sailed this ship with family once and the next time with friends ranging from 25-30. We had a blast and enjoyed the adults only area. It was very refreshing to have an adults night out with kids running around with nothing to do! We stuck to the adult areas in the evening and no kids in site! I like kids dont get me wrong.

Last but not least I loved their private island. I have been to RCI, HALS and Princess private islands and I have to say this is the nicest hands down again the adult section was wonderful.

As you can see I enjoyed my Disney cruises but one must go on understanding that the Disney scheduled style of entertainment is what you will find.

The Disney ships IMHO are the best looking modern day ships built. Disney has done a great job with their design but then Disney usually does a great job with just about anything they put their hands on. I like the new build designs. Very similar to the Magic and Wonder.

I also think Disney has great looking ships (comparatively speaking), but for me they slightly miss the mark. It mostly has to do with the funnels. They are just too short for the ship and the fake funnel looks, well fake. I also think it would be helpful if the funnels were up on a platform, like NORWAY's were. It would give them some extra height, and I think having a base would make them look more proportionate in relation to the rest of the ship. I also think it would help detract from the fact the Disney ships are very flat on top ... or at least they look that way.

None the less, compared to what is out there the Disney ships are still some of the most attractive.

Thanks for your replies. That is it then, the Disney ships are on my list!!

I have often thought that the Normandie must have been one of the inspirations for the Disney ships. Were her funnels not a little on the short side too?

Graham.

If I understand correctly, Disney have created a replica of the 'Art Deco' style Southampton Ocean Terminal of latter years, at Port Canaveral. Is this correct & if so, has anyone seen it? How is it?

Thanks.

Graham.

Obviously Disney is a young family cruise line. Not for seniors. Sure the "Mouse" is nice-personally I like Donald Duck better. But he seems to be a forgotten character these days-not much D. Duck stuff at their Disney stores.
Anyhow after going on an Alaska cruise (Princess)with over 400 screaming monkeys (kids) any Disney ship is not on any future cruise list! IMHO.

Frosty actually on the two Disney ships I saw less screaming kids then other cruise lines and I sailed in the thick of the summer. Compare that to my last cruise on NCL Spirit were the kids were screaming and teens were going going crazy onboard to the point of riding the elevators for fun. I saw non of that on the two Disney Cruises I went on....I think there is more for them to do and Disney is a bit more up on what kids like and teens as well then the other lines or so it seems

I suppose if you went during school term, between holiday periods, the kids would be mainly small ones who would go to early dinner. Late dinner & the adult only areas would then make for a less kiddy infested cruise experience.

The ships may be worth the risk!

Graham.

I've sailed on the Disney ships during the Easter school break. The ships were lovely. Yes there were a lot of kids but most of the time you didn't see them because the kids areas are separate. Before the forward funnel for adults and down below kids have their own deck. They also have the majority of their time fully occupied and supervised so they aren't running around screaming like on some ships!

It's of Interest to note that with the arrival of the new ships Disney will be expanding their horizons with the positioning of a Ship to do roundtrip Mexican Riviera out of L.A. I know that Disney did apply for permits to sail into Alaska's Glacier Bay but then withdrew their application! I wonder if they decided to wait for now. I dont think Disney will sail year round out of L.A., maybe their eventual plans are to sail summers mid May-Sept in Alaska? I think they would be a splendid addition to the Alaska Cruise fleet thats for sure!

Disney (thankfully) has managed a magnificent balance between form and function. Their ships (both the old and new) are a wonderful example to the industry that a ship can be functional without looking like a hideous floating block of flats.
