Carnival is moving the Spirit's Alaskan sailings from Vancouver to Seattle for 2010. The departures are going to be on Tuesday. Does that mean they are dropping Vancouver, or are they going to position a different ship into Vancouver?

I believe Carnival did drop Vancouver, since the only Carnival ship making the Alaska/Hawaii voyages is (and will be for the next couple of years)the Spirit.

Vancouver is a much better port to sail out of than Seattle. The beautiful evening Departure from Vancouver's spectacular harbor and the trip under the Lions Gate Bridge and Vancouver's beautiful Canada Place Cruise Terminal...And the more beautiful mountains...its just breathtaking.

I agree. Although the passage between Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula and into Seattle is also pretty breathtaking.

I wonder why Carnival would move the Spirit to Seattle for 2010. What are the advantages/disadvantages between homeporting out of Seattle or Vancouver? I know a few major advantages to homeport out of Vancouver is its 5 hours closer to Alaska and its much more economical to sail Inside Passage Cruises out of Vancouver vs Seattle..! And I believe Vancouver can hold more cruise ships between Canada Place and Ballantyne.

There was just a story about this on Canada AM and the main reason they were saying boils down to the ease and cost of Americans getting to/ from the port of departure (i.e. able to drive/ lower airfares within the US). It is essentially a reaction to their target market and the current economic downturn. These sailings are also round trip vs.one way, further reducing air costs and making travel by car to the ship easier.

Does Seattle have an airport use tax like Vancouver? Most US cities do not have this unless it's hidden in the ticket price. Anyone??

While I cannot comment on the US cities, I know that the Vancouver Airport Improvment Fee (not a tax) is included in the ticket price (there was a time when it was a stand alone fee paid at the airport). It is $5 for flying within BC and the Yukon or $15 for all other destinations - definitely not enough to make or break a pax coming to YVR - it is the cost of the air ticket and taxes themselves which are the issue.
