Thomson Cruises is to position a ship in Turkey next summer as part of a focus on the Eastern Mediterranean

The Thomson Celebration will run new itineraries from Marmaris in Turkey.

The company is also relocating the Thomson Spirit to Corfu for 2010.

Thomson Celebration’s fly-cruises from May next year will cover destinations including Izmir, Santorini, Alexandria and Ashdod in Israel with prices starting at £779 per person.

Thomson Spirit will sail from Corfu to Venice, Dubrovnik, Kotor in Montenegro, Athens and Rhodes with rates starting at £749.

TUI UK & Ireland director of cruising David Selby said: “Our new summer 2010 programme reaffirms our belief that the Eastern Mediterranean is the next cruising hotspot for the UK market, it reflects our ongoing commitment to our customers and what we believe they are looking for when booking a cruise holiday.

“The launch of a brand new full season of cruises from Marmaris in Turkey with flights from 12 UK airports offers our customers easy access to an exciting and popular area of the Mediterranean.”

Thomson Destiny will run three itineraries from Palma with departures on Saturdays rather than Thursdays with connecting flights from 14 UK airports. Prices start at £699.

The line is retiring smallest ship Calypso at the end of 2009 after a summer of cruises from Halkidiki and an seven-night farewell voyage from Limassol.

Three seasons. Given she was exactly 40 years old when Thomson first chartered her, it was unlikely she would taken on anything longer than a three year commitment!

NORWEGIAN MAJESTY will be handed over to Louis on 1 December this year. It has never been formally stated she will be chartered to Thomson but an assumption that she will replace THE EMERALD and THE CALYPSO. Louis, of course, may have other plans.

We were on the Carnival Miracle two weeks ago and saw the Thomson Destiny in St. Kitts. It had two beautiful teak decks at the stern of the ship. There were very few balconies, but lots of windows, rather then portholes. It also had the round "Viking Crown" lounge that wraps around the smokestack on RCI ships, which made me wonder about it. I looked it up after I got home and it was first, of course, RCI's Song of America.

RCI normally insist that their 'trade mark' Viking Crown is removed when they sell a ship, but not in this case.

They only insisted on it with the first two they sold, NORDIC PRINCE and SONG OF NORWAY.

When they sold SUN VIKING she kept it and this continued with SONG OF AMERICA.

I always thought SONG OF AMERICA was an attractive ship but overshadowed by the SOVEREIGN-class for which she was a sort of (much smaller) prototype. She looked much better in RCCL livery though.

I used to see her all the time in New York, when she was on the weekly New York-Bermuda run. Not a bad ship but I never had the desire to sail in her, though at one point when I was a kid my dad had our cruise choices down to SEAWARD or SONG OF AMERICA ... I guess he was really undecided so he left it up to me and I chose SEAWARD. If I could go back and do it over I would choose SONG OF AMERICA, SEAWARD was such a dog of a ship ... my one and only NCL cruise (not counting MARCO POLO) though! (But I don't want to be too hard on myself, that was 14 years ago, I was seven years old...! )

On the NYC-Bermuda run she (and RCCL in general) was always outclassed by the Celebrity ships. She was not really competitive with NCL either when they put the brand-new DREAMWARD on the run.

So you didn't sail on the Norway, Doug? I am sorry that I missed this famous ship. On the other hand, I am happy that I just caught QE2 & Regal Empress!

Yes, I am most interested in sailing with Thomson. I hope that they continue to do those Red Sea cruises. Thank you for the update.

Graham.
