Of the US marketed cruise lines, which has best maintained elements of its original registry heritage (based upon crew, nat'l dishes, entertainment, art/decor or other small touches)

Holland America
Norwegian
RCI
Costa
Celebrity (Greek... lest you forget)
Carnival (Italian origins)
Princess

Which was "most Italian" in the 1970s - 90s - Sitmar, Costa or Home Lines?

During the '70's, don't forget Italian Line [Italia] which was the most Italian arguably. After Italia closed down, Costa and Sitmar were the most Italian. Homes Lines had an all Italian crew, but was multi-national in ownership. My the 80's none had an all Italian crew exclusively.

Carnival has always had Italian deck and engine officers, that's all. This started when the Line began in the early '70s, as Italia was fading, and through the years many officers went to Carnival for work. But the Line does not have Italian roots; if anything they would be Jewish/Israeli roots, since that is where the Arisons came from.

During its early years, Royal Cruise Line was mono national. I remember only Greeks on board, but there may have been others in the "below deck" crew.

To answer the leading question on this thread, I would suggest that Holland America has best retained its origins (from the list of lines given.) They have maintained mostly Dutch officers, still have many Indonesian crew members, consistently rename their ships in traditional HAL names, and have tried to keep a lot of the on-board traditions alive (crew shows, Dutch and Indonesian specialty dishes, etc.)

I would give the nod to HAL even if it is 'watered down'.

As for the "most Italian", I would probably give that to Costa as they maintained a great dela of their Italian heritage with copious Italian crew and great Italian design into the mid-90's.

Sitmar was always a mix of Italian and Portugese/South American and Home Lines withered away in the mid- to late-80's.

I would say 3 lines, Holland America line, HAPAG Lloyd and Deilman Cruises.

HAPAG and Deilman are real German cruise company's are not only based in Germany but Germany is there prime market.

Greetings Ben

If you want ships that really have national character, look at the Japanese ships. ASUKA II (NYK), FUJI MARU and NIPPON MARU (MOL) and PACIFIC VENUS (SHK) are all genuinely Japanese ... owned, built, flagged and crewed in Japan and with almost exclusively Japanese passengers.

Is MSC marketed in the States?
I know they do Caribbean cruises, but not sure if the ships would appeal to the American market.
Their cruises are marketed quite heavily down here, but mainly the Med cruises..

Cunard was 'Mid'Atlantic' long before they were US owned. They were certainly more 'British' the 1st time I sailed on QE2 as a child back in 1970 than in later years.

Personally as a Dutchman myself I do not find HAL very dutch. It has little hints but for the rest it's more a artificial Vegas version of the Netherlands. Shame really as they could have been far more progressive instead of the stale old boring Carnival Corp mold they have been in for years.
However being a "Nederlander in den vreemde" I love the maatjes herring they serve on one night :-)

One line which might be not a real cruise but that has stayed close to it heritage is Hurtigruten here in Norway.
