From Seatrade Insider:

"Gaia and Argentea … Favolosa and Gaudiosa … Fauna and Flora.

These are just some of the 25 pairs of suggested newbuild names shortlisted by Costa Crociere from approximately 16,000 submissions by travel agents worldwide. The public is now invited to vote on their favorites.

Costa seeks names for its 16th and 17th vessels, a pair of 114,500gt ships scheduled for delivery from Fincantieri’s Marghera yard in spring 2011 and 2012.

Voting is open until Oct. 20 at www.worldofcosta.com.

It’s part of Costa’s ‘Send us a sea of names’ project, which received suggestions from travel agents in more than 40 countries.

The favorites so far? When Seatrade Insider checked this morning, Emozione and Passione were leading the vote count. Estate and Primavera were bringing up the rear."

I was appalled when only a year ago Costa announced their two new ships were to be called COSTA MERAVIGLIA and COSTA FAVOLOSA. Thankfully, the former appears to have fallen by the wayside to be replaced by COSTA GAUDIOSA and COSTA EMOZIONE amongst other names. God (iosa) help us!!!!!

Tony

Hmmm, it is about time Costa went back to 1. decorating thier own ships without Farcus and 2. going back to the Italian tradition of naming ships after blokes. I mean.............

You seem to have forgotten that Costa had one of their ships named Daphne in 1979 !

She was converted in to a cruise ship from the cargo/passenger ship Port Melbourne !

Not quite a blokes name unless he was gay !

Danae and Daphne are indeed female names but these ships were not named by Costa. Costa just did not change the names when they chartered these vessels. Costa even briefly continued a variation of the old naming scheme after Danae and Daphne joined their fleet.

Actually Carras Line (Greek) had the two ships rebuilt as DAPHNE and DANAE. After a few years Costa chartered them, but never changed the names.

There was no reason why Costa could not have changed the names so perhaps they did like them.

They did make an outright purchase of these ships in 1984 and they still kept their names !

I often saw these two ships on their caribbean Costa cruises in the 1970's .

That was MSC. MSC MERAVIGLIA and FAVOLOSA.

Those orders morphed into different ones; I'm not sure if they kept the names.

That isn't funny and doesn't even make any sense.

Anyway, as far as the gender of Costa ship names go, DANAE and DAPHNE make no difference since there were still ships with female names - ANNA C., FRANCA C. and so on.

Yes Costa simply named ships after members of the family, male and female, hence Andrea C, Anna C, Bianca C and Carla C on the ladies side. Wouldn't it be nice to see such names return but have Costa in front of everything is simply a useful marketing tool, people may not remember the names of the ship but will remember it was Costa something.

I wasn't really referring to Costa ships as such but more generally, Andrea Doria, Michelangelo etc etc. Obviously the Italians did use female names but often chose male ones, just the current rash of names is so naff, I mean Costa Passion !

You're right, Andrea is a male name in Italian, pronounced an-DRAY-uh, as in an-DRAY-uh DOR-i-a.

Hang on a second. We deride cruise lines for using the "same old same old" all the time, to the extent that they've all got the same names on their ships.

Now one cruise line decides to do something different, and we're going to lay into them for doing so?

I think a lot of people ridicule Costa's names because they're difficult (for English-speakers) to pronounce. Let's remember that Costa is by Italians and mostly for the Italian market, in spite of occasional forays into other parts of the world.

Some of the same people put down Pullmantur Cruises for having English words in their ships' names, so what gives?

I love Costa Lunare and Solare....

Would love to see the Costa Riviera name return, but I do give major credit to them for not recycling their names.

I wouldn't say Costa is mostly for the Italian market. Italy is Costa's #1 market but it is probably the most "international" cruise line in the world and something like 75% of Costa's passengers aren't Italian.

Nevertheless, I really don't have a problem with most of Costa's names. I do think COSTA DELIZIOSA sounds stupid, because of what it means, not just the sound of it. The rest are fine. I even like some of them - I think COSTA LUMINOSA is a very nice name, for example, and I think the ship looks pretty nice too.

For that matter I have no problem with most of MSC's names either - again, I think most of them sound nice and they have nice meanings too. I'm not fond of MERAVIGLIA and FAVOLOSA for the same reason as DELIZIOSA - simply because I think naming a ship MARVELOUS, FABULOUS or (most of all) DELICIOUS just sounds dumb in any language.

I will say that MERAVIGLIA sounds much nicer than it looks on paper to non-Italian-speakers who probably do not get the "gli." (I can't really explain how you pronounce "gli" as there is really no equivalent sound in English.)

Pullmantur's names were/are just incoherent.

Of course it works the other way too, look at VENTURA, a foreign word presumably chosen just because it "sounds nice."

Yes, I like that pair.

I think my favorite recent ship names are L'AUSTRAL and LE BOREAL. AUSTRALE and BOREALE are actually choices on the Costa ballot and probably my favorite pair there but I'm not voting for them because we already will have a pair of ships with almost those names (but in French) ... so I've voted for SOLARE/LUNARE.

Speaking of names. Taken in vain on these pages is "Pullmantur." Now as a Yank, I always consider this originally meant "Pullman Tour," namely travel aboard those splendid pieces of passenger railway rolling stock originally created by George M. Pullman and operated on US rails for most of the 20th Century. (see my Cruise Talk article on the Pullman, "Dover Harbor.") Did old George form a subsidiary in Europe to run ships or what? If so, when?

According to its web site it started as a travel agency in 1971.

By then it is quite possible that any trademarks related to "Pullman" had lapsed and the name was just chosen because it sounded nice. I doubt it has any relation to the Pullman sleeping car company in the US, which went out of business in 1968.

I think "pullman" refers to autobuses in spanish, (and not trains) and as the website says, it started with coach (bus) tours in 1971, hence "Pullmantur", and the company retained its name even it went on to become bigger and became a major Spanish travel company, like Neckerman or TUI in Germany, travelling with all kinds of transportation, including ships and planes.

The once was a link with the Pullman Company according to the Pullman historical website, To wit:

"While Pullman attempted to establish his company in Europe he ultimately could not compete with George Nagelmackers, a Belgian, who formed a sleeping car service, the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, that was headquartered in Paris. Pullman sold Nagelmackers his interests and operations in Europe in 1888.

"A company division was formed in England after the Pullman shop in Detroit furnished an English railroad with several cars.

"The Pullman name lives today in Europe, a symbol of elegance and luxury in a hotel chain in several countries and in North Africa. It is not unusual today to see “Pullman” tourist buses on European highways. Of course, these operations never had any connection with the original Pullman Co."
