Carnival to Dissolve all Brands

Carnival Headquarters - 4/1/2010: It has been announced that the Carnival Corporation & PLC have decided to dissolve their various cruise brands over the next five years.

Carnival currently own Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Seabourn Cruise Line in North America; P&O Cruises, Cunard Line and Ocean Village in the United Kingdom; AIDA Cruises in Germany; Costa Cruises in Italy and P&O Cruises Australia in Australia. Combined, it operates a fleet of 88 ships, totaling more than 160,000 berths with a further 18 ships to be delivered by 2012.

CEO Micky Arison announced “that the time is right for Carnival to create one global cruise brand”. He went on to say “Even ten years ago the global cruise market was not ready for the introduction of our ‘Fun Ships’, preferring various nice brands.” However the market has matured dramatically. He said “ For example a P&O traditionalist is happy to cruise on Princess derived vessel such as Ventura and a Cunard faithful is happy to cruise on a vista class derivative, such as Queen Victoria. In Europe Costa has been greatly expanded using the carnival Vista class ship designs, with interior décor by Carnival’s Joe Farcus”.

All of the Carnival brands will lose their individual identity and be re -branded as ‘Fun Ships’ by 2015. The external liveries will change to match the existing Carnival ‘Fun Ship’ fleet. It is anticipated that many of the ships names will be retained but with the pre-fix “Carnival” such as “Carnival Ventura” or “Carnival Fortuna”.

It is expected that interior décor will be ‘Carnivalised’ as the various ships are refitted, although this will not happened immediately.

Industry commentators have speculated for some years that it would only be a matter of time before Carnival felt the need to compete with RCI’s and NCL’s global brands.

Good one

Especially the last paragraph, more than anything, gives it away as not being a Carnival-issued statement.

It appears Micky Arison has no interest in the history of the companies they have bought up and the loyal following that ships like those operated by P & O enjoy.

Perhaps if bookings drop off, when he changes the names of the P & O ships to things like ' Carnival Oriana ', he will find that future passengers do not want to travel on his so called fun ships.

I can not see that there will be any benefit to the old P & O share holders, like myself, as all these changes to the ships names etc will cost money !

Thats unless it is an April Fool joke !

Is it just me or do the April fools jokes not have the same impact anymore. The best parts are watching those that forgot that it was April 1st and believing the stories. I can recall, I got majorly shocked my first time here.
None-the-less very good story M. Your third paragraph has some very great points that warrant discussion outside of an april fools joke. With lines sharing ship design (vista) does the 'branding' make that much of a difference?
Just my thoughts .

I think I remember one year that we were trying to figure out if the post was actually a joke or not because it sounded legit.

April 1st is my favorite time on Cruise Talk.

Clearly April fools joke. Simply it's not possible to dissolve Holland America Line the continuing of the line is secured in the take over contract. I thought similar contracts where signed with the take over of Costa and P&O/Princess.

Greetings Ben.

I almost took it seriously myself...good job Malcolm, you always manage to give me a smile.

However, it could happen for real and who is to say it couldn't??
