From another site.

10 Aurora & Arcadia
P&O Cruises The Daily Mail reports passengers on both ships have been told to keep their cabin lights off and not venture out onto the promenade deck between the hours of 6.30pm and 7am while sailing through the Gulf of Aden. Despite the blackout, they were permitted to leave their cabins. The policy comes in the wake of increased concern about threat from Somali pirates in the area.

I don't think I would be going there anytime soon. It is surpisingng to see cruise ships traverse the Gulf. I wonder if they had a warship escort?

It's not really surprising to see them take this route, quicker, less fuel used etc

What I would be happier to see is an escort along with opening up the throttles and going flank through the area.

However, as we have seen in the last couple of weeks these pirates think nothing of being a thousand miles out to see and some are even stupid enough to attack war ships.

In the end, give me the Voyager or QE2/QM2 and I would be happier.

Queen Mary 1's last pre-war peacetime voyage in 1941 had the lights out too.

The Coastal communities in the USA had black out nights during the war. I recall as a child black window shades in the attic of my grandparents house.

Actually that was in late August, 1939. The War began in early September, and QUEEN MARY was quickly converted to a troop ship and sent down to Australia.

Thanks Rich, I could not remember the exact year. Bob Hope was on that voyage. It was a scary time for the parents and grandparents of the baby-boomers

I remember my grandmother telling me that there was a submarine scare in L.A. during the war. Residents were asked to draw their drapes and or turn off their lights.

Its not that smart a policy.

We must remember that pirates earn millions a year and can afford radio, radar, night vision goggles. Having the lights off simply means they can approach undetected and board without being seen.

Full speed and a quick zig zag pattern (if they are known to be approaching) is the only way to prevent a boarding. There will be enough wash and swell that it would topple any little boat trying to get near.

Not all pirates are that well equipped. 'Lights off' as described above also does not mean that a boat approaching the ship would remain undetected. Beside that one must not forget that that such measures (limiting access to the open deck, reducing light etc.) are also necessary to 'calm down' passengers or to keep the passengers under control.

Does not a cruiseship have radio, radar, night vision goggles? Infared cameras on cruiseships can detect other shipping nearby.

Just BLAST them!...I don't give a crap about these evil
crooks..Bazooka them....machine gun them...grenade them

Just eliminate them...They plan on causing mayhem &
all manner of misery & hold to ransom people & crews who
have NOTHING to do with their self induced misery...

Over it!...use the power those large to massive cruise ships
possess hit the throttle flank speed baby, armed security &
Navy support & shoot to kill!.

Politically incorrect?..again I don't give a crap!,I don't care
give these wipes a dose of their own medicine!
