From Carnival:

Carnival’s classic American steakhouses offered on several ships continue to be hugely popular with guests. This week, Carnival began a test, offering some of the most popular selections from its steakhouse menus in the main dining rooms on three ships that don’t feature steakhouses. The entrees are being offered on the Carnival Paradise, Carnival Triumph and Carnival Inspiration and carry a fee of $18 each.

The four steakhouse entrees added to main dining room menus include a nine-ounce filet mignon, an 18-ounce grilled prime rib chop, broiled Maine lobster tail, and surf and turf consisting of a half lobster tail and petite filet mignon. The beef is USDA prime, dry aged, the same beef that is served in Carnival’s steakhouses.

The testing period is expected to run approximately three months during which time the company will evaluate guest demand for these specialty menu items.

The new steakhouse entrees complement the line’s wide-ranging main dining room menu choices, which include a flat-iron steak offered nightly, along with prime rib and broiled Caribbean lobster tail served every voyage.

Carnival Inspiration currently operates four- and five-day Caribbean cruises from Tampa, Carnival Triumph four- to seven-day Caribbean voyages from New Orleans, and Carnival Paradise three- and four-day Baja departures from Long Beach, Calif.

Ummmm, what makes this so different? Cruise lines have been serving steaks for years, they've always been good. Unless this is another way to squeeze more money from pax.?? I'm not dissing Carnival..., won't do that. However, I just find it very interesting that they want to do this. Don't cruise lines have bistros where they charge extra for certain meals they won't serve unless you get it ala carte? Hope you don't mind me asking these questions.

Carnival is following Royal Caribbean on this. RCI started a test a few years back on two ships where they offered a "Chops" quality steak for a surcharge. They eventually moved it fleet wide as it was very successful. We have tried it and it is a much better quality steak than what one receives off of the standard menu. Give it time and Carnival will make it fleet wide and yes this is a way for the cruise lines to increase their on board revenue.

I have no issues with it. It's a choice.

What is so ironic about this is that Carnival fans on another message board so enjoyed stating that Royal Caribbean "charged for steaks in the MDR". They really loved to throw that in the face of anyone that suggested that Carnival "nickel dimed". Now guess who is doing it! LOL

I also have no problem with it. You can still order plenty of free steaks, they are just not the premium, aged beef quality that you find in the speciality restaurants. Now if you want one of those premium steaks without going to the speciality restaurant, you can. Personally I would just prefer going to the speciality restaurant if I am going to spend extra $$. Better ambiance and I think that is part of what you are paying for.

I always find it amusing when you read about steaks being offered as entree. It is a quirk in the translation from English (and Australian) to American. To us entree is served first (appetiser to Americans) as in the entree or beginning of the meal and the main meal is called main course. It's funny how language evolves (Don't get me started on fanny!!).

Why not just build the alternative eatery in the first place? Or just turn that "Seaview Bistro" into an alternative steakhouse restaurant?

I agree about going to Chops for a nice steak but one night we were really tired from a hot day in port and ordered the filets from room service. Arrived nicely prepared and it was nice to have that option.

Cool! I didn't realize you could order them from room service. I just thought in Chops and the MDR. I agree that is a very nice option.

Things like this point to the demise of the "Free" MDR experience. It will be pay as you go in the future.
I have and probably never will try the $$ steak venues.
Beef in general IMHO is range fed(from Argentina) and usually tough and poor quality. I have refrained from ordering that in the MDR. Is this new beef $$$offering corn feed from the US or Kobe beef? I doubt it!

What next a baggage handling fee ala the airlines to bring your bags up and back to/from the pier??

Next step fore passenger stop paying fore food in the mdr. No matter what cruise line no matter the quality. It's let I say it rude bullshit from the cruise industry to try squeeze every penny out of there passengers. Well the prizes of the fares are quite high (over here in The Netherlands at least)

Greetings Ben.
