From Cruise Community :

"With Radiance of the Seas and Splendour of the Seas now added to the list, Royal Caribbean International will be updating five of its 22 ships in 2011.
The others are Oasis of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas, in a program the company is calling its ‘Royal Advantage.’ Betsy O’Rourke, svp marketing, explained the initiative as ‘our commitment to continuously contemporize and innovate.’

The planned enhancements of the five ships will add Oasis-class features during Royal Caribbean’s 40th anniversary year.

In mid-2011, prior to its Australasia deployment, Radiance of the Seas will begin its revitalization with the addition of new specialty restaurants, a Diamond Lounge for Crown & Anchor Society members, a Royal Babies and Tots Nursery and other features. (See separate story in Refurb & Interiors.)

Splendour of the Seas will receive two new specialty restaurants, and the Park Café, the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery, a Diamond and Concierge Lounge, flat-panel televisions, and WiFi shipwide.

Additionally, there will be new balcony staterooms, select stateroom enhancements and upgrades to public areas including a refreshed Windjammer Marketplace.

Oasis of the Seas will gain new on-board programs starting in the first quarter with the DreamWorks Experience, 3-D movies in the Opal Theater and a Starbucks coffee shop to eventually replace Mondo Café on the Royal Promenade. These features bring it in line with the new Allure of the Seas.

And, in early 2011, as earlier reported, Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas will emerge from drydocks at Grand Bahama Shipyard with new dining, entertainment, children’s programming and other enhancements including the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery, The Cupcake Cupboard, the Wayfinding navigation system and an oversized poolside video screen.

In addition, the DreamWorks experience, 3-D movies and free guest service kiosks will be implemented on Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas, and Liberty will stage a new Broadway show, ‘Saturday Night Fever: The Musical.’ "

May be old news for some.

Good to see they have including Splendor OTS who is well overdue - wonder where they will put the 2 new restaurants and galleys without loosing cabins.

We assume the new restaurants for Radience will replace the current not be in addition ? ie 4 ?

Does anyone know where the new balconies on Splendour will be added? I'm assuming they will be the cabins above the lifeboats and below the current two decks of balconies. Perhaps an extension similar to what the Century got recently.

I think its great they are redoing the Splendour. I hope they redo the Legend. Sailed on the Legend in 2009 and she really is a nice ship. When I was on her I was thinking the same thing. They could add a row of balconies to the existing oceanviews above the lifeboats and below the existing balcony cabins. Possibly they will create extensions on the existing balconies as these balconies are flush with the superstructure of the ship and if they add balconies it would look akward. Who knows usually cruise lines do not worry about how the outside of their ship's look!

I imagine the balconies on SPLENDOUR will be much like what have been installed on CELEBRITY CENTURY and (even more so) MEIN SCHIFF. That would enlarge the existing balconies by extending them outward in line with the new balconies added on the deck below.

One wonders if these new changes will eventually be seen across the fleet (except MONARCH/MAJESTY). This is certainly a good start but it's a big fleet -- unlike Celebrity, which only has four older ships that will be getting refits to bring them in line with the newest ones (assuming CENTURY goes to TUI Cruises in the near future, but she has some of the newer features already anyway).

Either way, it's good to see money being spent on older ships, though I hesitate to call any except SPLENDOUR "older." But given that there are no new ships on order for RCI, I suppose this could be a big focus for the company over the next few years, which would be very good.

Wow..it shows you the pace of change when a new ship is going to get updated!
