Louis plc has recently announced that it has extended the charter of THOMSON SPIRIT and THOMSON DESTINY for Thomson Cruises until the end of year 2014. The on-going agreement would have ended at the end of this year without the extension.

This means Thomson Cruises will probably continue with the same fleet at least until 2014. THOMSON DREAM has charter agreement for ten years, and what I know THOMSON CELEBRATION has also been chartered at least until the year 2014.

What will happen with Thomson’s black horse, ISLAND ESCAPE in the near future remains to be seen. Her itinerary has been published at least until the end of this year.

THOMSON SPIRIT will by the way end her season for Thomson in Canary Islands next month, and will perform one special 3-night cruise for Louis Cruises from Limassol to Beirut on the 18th February. This has been kind of a tradition for the Spirit already couple of years now. At the end of February she will again continue cruises for Thomson in the Red Sea.

Interesting. Louis may have held back making any decisions to expand until Thomson decided whether to extend the charter of Destiny & Spirit. If the charter had been cancelled, Louis would have had two newer and larger ships (relatively speaking) back in their fleet to replace The Emerald, Sapphire, The Calypso and the recently-sold Aquamarine. Now that they have secured the charter for another three years, I think they will have to seriously look soon at acquiring new tonnage.

I wonder if they'd be interested in any of Carnival's Fantasy-class ships at this point.

The question is whether Carnival is interested in giving up the FANTASY-class ships at a price that Louis can afford. Perhaps Louis can pick up the PACIFIC SUN at a relatively cheap price.

There's a perfectly good [bar something to do with the engines] vessel sitting on their doorstep, who potters around back forth between Piraeus Roads and Syros every so often. I believe there is still some sort of a court case going on regarding the proposed purchase and then not by Louis, but if they are indeed looking and need a ship maybe an agreement can be reached.

If Norwegain Dream is still suffering from engine problems there is no point in Louis Cruises buying a ship which is going to be unrealiable.

She has been floating about in the medi for over two years now and still nobody seems interested in buying her.

Do you know what the "Technical Issue" is? There is plenty of speculation over this but nothing official stated anywhere. There are many ships that have been sailing about with "technical issues" of one thing or another but it doesn't neccessarily make them unreliable, just not up to speed.

The price was too high - for a ship with 'technical issues'. Maybe these can be resolved, maybe not - a much lower price to reflect this might do the job. Louis purchased Cristal with problematic engines; I have not read of any problems with her since their takeover? She was cheap - maybe they can do the same with N Dream. She appears to have been maintained during the time.

Carnival would not be interested in selling at any price at which Louis would be interested in buying.

I would suggest the price ($218m) was too high even for a ship without technical issues.

On her trips from Syros to Piraeus and Kusadasi the fastest recorded speeds on the AIS maps have been about 12.5 knots.

Not quite the cruising speed which I would think Louis Cruises would require !

I don't believe the 12.5K has anything to do with the issues. She has been spotted doing slow speed cruises from time to time since she arrived in Greece. One report was that to keep her seaworthy or to do with Greek laws they periodically take her to sea for a little junket. Also some of the trips are reportedly to do with moving her for inspections. A long line of people have done the tire kicking on her but Star seems set on their price and no one seems willing to come even close to what Star is asking.
