Oceania is no better or worse than any other line when it comes to airfare. Past 3 cruises I ended up booking my own. If you do, give yourself a few days ahead, because if you miss the connection to the cruiseship it is your problem.
Oceania? it is actually worth the higher fares. Food, service, inclusions, and less nickel and diming, ones evens out with HAL or Celebrity.
Oceania just seem to make a bigger deal out of the free airfare etc
To answer your other question, yes in many ways they are better than HAL and Celebrity, IMHO they make a nice stepping stone towards the true 6 star lines.
