Assuming they've kept the quality the same then in the case of Murano or the ocean liner restaurants it's still worth every penny.

I think so too. Frankly the specialty restaurants on Celebrity are the best I've experienced on any cruise line. Sure beats "Pinnacle Grill" which was average at best.

The other thing is that these restaurants are still optional. One can eat extremely well in the dining room, room service, and buffet with no extra charge.

Ah, but when you eat in one of the Speciality Restaurants on-board, you have already paid for a meal in the main dining room!

I've not tried them, but everyone tells me they are excellent!

I think I may be the only person in the world who didn't enjoy their meal in Murano (Celebrity Solstice, Oct 2009). I blogged about it here.

We are not big eaters. According to the blog there was too much food(a waste IMHO) if you can't eat all of it.
For us $80 would probably buy 2 weeks of food.Groceries.
Some say they will not cruise certain cruise lines due to smoking restrictions.
If and when eating will be a pay as you go on cruise ships(specialty restaurants)with no inclusive meals, our cruising days are over.

Tom, I have had all these feelings too. I think the above statements represent the cultural difference between Brits and Americans.

To me good food does not mean giant plate fulls of 'fussy' food. Likewise, gservice does not mean the staff are all over me like a rash.

I like my waiters to be seen and NOT heard.:-)

Tom, enjoyed reading your blog. I especially liked the part where you mentioned the countless restaurant staff: "I was constantly waiting for someone else to pop up with something else; and of course they all kept coming back to ask if everything was alright? Everything is fine, and would be even better, I felt like saying, if people would leave us alone to enjoy the food." I've heard this before on other boards where the constant attention can be overkill and can take away from the ambiance and fine dining experience of eating in a specialty restaurant. I really do not like waiters or staff that hover while I eat. That gets under my skin in a bad way.

I wonder how much variation there is between ships. The service certainly was not as Tom described on CELEBRITY CENTURY last year -- maybe because the restaurant itself was smaller. I am not sure where they would have fit all those waiters! I can see how such service could easily become irritating.

For me, Murano on CELEBRITY SOLSTICE was probably the best dining experience I've had on any ship ever. I found the service to be proactive and attentive, but never overbearing. I don't recall any "hovering" of waiters which can be off putting. This being said, there was always someone available quickly if you needed anything.

Murano was as close to French Haute Cuisine as anything I've had in Paris or anywhere else. It was truly what I would call gourmet, while others may find it too fancy. I absolutely understand why it may not be for everyone. This type of food and service can make some people uncomfortable, but I thought Celebrity did an amazing job with all aspects of the experience (food, quality, presentation, atmosphere, service). Having a truly memorable meal (for positive reasons) is becoming increasingly rare on cruise ships these days. For me Murano was a stand out in a sea of mediocrity.

I went back and looked at my review from 2008. This is what I wrote:

quote:

Murano – We absolutely love this experience. The food and service were 5-star, as good as anything I have experienced at sea or on land. This is truly upscale gourmet dining in a beautiful setting. Service was flawless.

To this day I have yet to have a better meal on a cruise ship.

Ernie

OK, start the flaming, but I didn't love Murano as much as the M class atlernative restaurants a few years ago. I've eaten in Muranos now 4 times and its fine, not the best meal I've had at sea, though better in ambiance than the dinning room. Maybe because I ate their solo on some nights; I was overlooked? (in contrast my solo dining experiences at Tuscan Grill were great sitting along the aft windows)

I love the Solstice class and I have only eaten in the main dining room once, and I think the gathering of alternative restaurants is great and I would pay any price not to eat with the masses on a 2,500 passenger ship

No flames. All our experiences are going to differ, and we all have different expectations about what equates to great food and service. It's all very subjective. In addition there are many variables that alter the experience from cruise to cruise that are out of our control (new wait staff, new chef, new dining room manager, change of food suppliers, etc).

It's rare I've read a unanimous review of a restaurant on land or sea.

Following on from my earlier post, we pretty much avoided the speciality restaurants on cruises after the experience on Solstice. However on our recent cruise on Ventura we had a meal in The White Room, a restaurant that's been blessed, or approved, by Marco Pierre White. He is (or was, when he was actively cooking) a very good chef in the UK - he gained three Michelin stars. This is a hard one to explain, but I would describe it like this:- a) I suspect that the food in Muranos might have been slightly better than the food in The White Room; but b) we enjoyed the latter meal a lot more than the one in Muranos - the service was good but not too close, and we felt more comfortable. I suspect that Malcolm might have it right when he described the service in Muranos as probably geared to the expectations of american diners, while that in The White Room would be geared to british diners.

As regards the price increase on board Celebrity, why not? Ernie's comments indicate that they're clearly getting it pretty right, even extremely right, which must provide value for money.

Back on the Century in 2007 I really enjoyed dinner at Murano´s. Food was excellent and the atmosphere in the Restaurant was very calm and chique.

Todd English on QM2 was OK and these places on HAL were terrible. During one RSVP cruise on the Zuiderdam the service was downright terrible and we were already standing up and asking for the bill as nobody paid attention. Not what you expect in a specialty restaurant. Never bothered to go back there afterwards

Any chance this is related to the announcement last month of "Individual Dining Packages"? Maybe a way to push people towards the packages?

From last month's announcement:

"Individual Dining Packages," which are offered at a single, per-person price for either three or five specialty restaurant visits, are a simple way for vacationers to bring a variety of high-end culinary experiences into their trip....

...The dining packages are the result of guest feedback which includes a strong desire for the value and convenience provided by packages, and is the latest in what Celebrity will make a series of packaged experiences, with the first having been its beverage packages. With a strong focus on recognizing that vacationers' time is precious, Celebrity aims to help them pre-plan many elements of their cruise and introduced beverage packages to the cruise industry in 2010. The premium cruise line recently won the VIBE Vista Adult Alcohol-Free Program Award in the chain hotel casino and cruise line category for its innovative non-alcoholic beverage package offerings.

...Celebrity's new specialty dining packages offer a discount of more than 25 percent, and are available for purchase onboard. Package pricing varies by ship

That seems to be a general consensus around the internet. Although this would make you wait until embarkation to book the packages unless they start offering it online. Maybe that's coming next month as well?
