These short cruises from LA, with Princess Cruises, are not really a new idea but go back to when Princess Cruises was owned in the early 1970's by the then UK company P & O Cruises.

Then the original ' Sun Princess ' was in service and we often operated a 3 or 4 day cruises to Ensenada

Well having Princess offering these cruises does make a nice change for us west coast cruisers, even for someone like myself that likes Carnival, we refuse to cruise on the Carnival Inspiration, it's just a bad cruise, no balcony (unless you get a suite which frankly is way to much $$$ for what is offered, the service was blah and the food wasn't great.

Throw in ports which as Neil points out have been offered since the dark ages and it's really not appealing.

As I have said a few times, Carnival needs to develop a new port on the Baja as it has done on the Caribbean side.

They used to offer a 5 day sailing that went from LA down to Cabo, that was a great cruise.

Stanley McDonald popularized the 3- and 4-day "party" cruise long before P&O got Princess. The Princess Carla (Carla C.) did Party Cruises to Ensenada, Mexico for Los Angeles in the late 1960s and I am pretty sure the Princess Italia did as well.

In those days Princess was a start-up run by an entrepreneur named Stanley McDonald. He actually started the company with the Princess Patricia from CP and sold the firm twice, the second time being to P&O in 1973. But that was years after he built up the West Coast cruise market.

The idea of these "party cruises" might come from the coastal voyages the American ships had also offered. American President promoted their coastal trips on the President liners and Matson also offered trips up and down the coast.

Greek Line did quite a few short party cruises from the 1960's till they went bust in 1975.

Greek Line was the NCL of its epoch.

Yes but we were talking about Los Angeles and the West Coast.

On the East Coast there's a much longer tradition of these shortie cruises. In the 1920s some of the famous liners ran short jaunts mostly to Nova Scotia and they were informally know as Booze Cruises because America was of course officially "dry" in the 1920s.

By the 1950s and 1960s there are a bunch of ships that do short cruises from New York and of course Miami starts to emerge. Costa was doing the Bahamas cruises as well as others and in New York Chandris was doing lots of Party Cruises too.
