Before today's big reveal: Internet rumour suggests that Royal Caribbean have finally abandoned the on-big main dining room concept and are moving towards an NCL type 'freestyle' system with multiple dining rooms.

Another strong rumour is that both ships will have a Jamie Oliver Italian alternative restaurant on-board. (UK Celebrity Chef).

There's a piece on my blog about RC's new 'Dynamic Dining':

Our and my last few cruises; moving to 2nd seating and avoiding the Jersey Shore/Blackpool cruise format, we have done very well with tablemates.

Oceania has no assigned seating and we had great mates every night of both cruises.

On a 14 day voyage different dining venues is good, but on a 5 day milk run?

Even the oldest of the Royal Caribbean and Carnival ships have at least 2 dining choices: Buffet and dining room.

The LoveBoats with one dining room had a different ethnic theme every night, but the unadventurous could still order from the Ruby Tuesday or Wimpy's menu.

We actually prefer the dining room for breakfast since we do not like lines, and they will always bring you more food if you ask; better for portion control, and if you traveling with elderly or mobility impaired it sure beats carrying a tray.

The Dynamic dining concept is a massive change for RCCL. The restaurants themselves look nice, but by failing to have a 'main dining room' they also have one fewer wow spaces. Who can say they weren't impressed the first time they went into a Voyager or Freedom class dining room?

This also means RCCL move away from the social aspect of shared tables. So will Carnival react with the Vista?

I see the massive buffet areas with sections cordenned off with table cloths and waiter service, like the Kings Cross on QM2. With each section a different theme.

The Galaxy in 2008 did such. You could have a buffet dinner, and a section of 20 tables had a special menu.

IMHO RCL does not have anytime dining down right yet.
It should be called my reservation time dining. If you don't get a reservation you have to wait a LONG time to be seated.
On IOTS we booked for 6:30PM every evening up front and went to the same area every night-same table same wait staff and same people sitting adjacent to us.We had table for 2. We did thew same thing on Reflection no problems.
I think Princess had the best anytime dining- just walk up and get seated. Only rarely did we have to wait.
I have heard that NCL 's system is poor as you can NEVER get to the dining venue you want as they are booked up in advance by reservation. It would seem RCL is going to follow that path.

As to $$$ dining --IMHO NOT WORTH the extra cost!!! You have already paid for your meals as part of the cruise fare!!

Yes Matt, this is like the fall of communism (MDR) and the triumph of Capitalism (Freestyle)!

The problem is that 18 dining options means ship packed with dining rooms, galleys and entertainment venues. There's no room for the "Wow" spaces that we associate with RCL: No Central parks, Tall Atriums, Ice Rinks, Royal proms or many double height rooms.

If we forget the kids-gimmicks on deck, why should us grown-ups cruise on quantum over Breakaway/Getaway? They have the lovely 'Waterfront' feature, after all.

I used to enjoy the fact that RCL and NCL were very different!

Royal Caribbean considers the dining to be part of the Wow on Quantum along with the outdoor "gimmicks" as you called them but other spaces are Two70, the SeaPlex, the Solarium. Two70 is the one they are going to be the most excited about and it has some major Wow features built it with technology, etc. They have dancing robots completed choreographed planned!

NCL's Waterfront is nice but it was a major bust all winter on the Breakaway with the cold and snow and wind and all. Passengers can not use those spaces for the first day or two and the last day or two of the cruise and even then the wind at sea sailing from New York makes the spaces less attractive.

Royal Caribbean seems to be planing to take the whole dining concept up a notch. Compare NCL's Olive Garden / Spaghetti House Italian to Jamie Oliver's Italian for example. However I agree the whole idea of having to make reservations months in advance and plan out cruise day by day that early is the least exciting part of the idea.

I have to wonder if it works on Quantum will it be retrofitted to the Allure, Oasis and the older ships quickly? I would guess Oasis 3 will be built with the concept as well.

Is Jamie's Italian known in the US? or to those travelling on Quantum? Personally having eaten in Jamie's I would not give it preference over NCL's La Cucina. I guess some like a "name".

I like the concept but then I detest the MDR. Did not step foot in the MDR on the Celebrity Reflection last week. We dined five evenings in specialty dining so the more options that the cruise lines give the better I like it.

Pam -- I would say Jamie Oliver is known by name but I doubt his restaurant or the concept is well-known in the USA.

Maybe I am spoiled because living in New York and traveling you get the opportunity to have good food on a regular basis. But for me the dining in general is for "middle America" where all of this seems to be a lot more exciting.

Specifically on NCL some of the locals have impressed me with good food and a nice concept. I liked the cook to order in the lido on the prior generation but the newest ones seem to have forgone that I guess because of the numbers they have to serve at lunch time for example. I saw much less cook to order versus the Norwegian Pearl and Gem for example.

Some of the restaurants seem to be homogenized to produce food that suits the general public's tastes. The Italian is one example for me. We get much better Italian food at our local Italian grocery than on the NCL ships. To me it seems like and looks like a Spaghetti House (or in the USA we have Olive Garden). Sort of bland and sort of what the mass audience imagines should be Italian food. I have not had the opportunity to try Ocean Blue and at $50 a head I am not sure I would .... it seems simply too expensive for a cruise but maybe the food is worth it. It would be a "special occasion" local and I know getting reservations has been very hard.

Cunard hosted an event that I attended in the QM2's restaurant and I was under-whelmed. Service was slow, the food was luke warm, etc. When I crossed on QM2 I did not go because I was happy with the Grill and people from my table went and came back saying the same about the food, etc. They had a second reservation which they canceled.

I like the ideas and where NCL, Royal Caribbean generally are going but I still like to have a main room as well. I wonder if they will be able to join people up or have communal tables going in at least some of the restaurants? Especially since both are trying to encourage single travelers, what do they do? If I am traveling single how do I make reservations months in advance? Or do I just get the "left over" spots if I wait till I get on the ship?

On NCL I have already seen unhappy people who could not get into restaurants or even get any place at a time they felt reasonable. I imagine it is only going to get worse which is going to have a reverse effect of making people unhappy and turn them off from cruising.

Adam Goldstein has said something like that they are focussed on Quantum/Anthem's dining at present, but it is not impossible that once it is fully up and running to their satisfaction, that the idea might be extended fleet-wide.

Consider this. what is purposed is a 50/50 split between the free venues and $$$ venues.
When the free ones are booked solid this leaves only the $$$ dining. Just another way to get your money.
If this happens RCL will be placed on my list of cruise lines NOT to cruise on.
Not WOW RCL but BOW WOW!!!

At this point RCI has not released the size of the four main non fee dining rooms. They are taking up a good chunk of space on two decks. Dining will start at 5:30 in the four DR's if they follow the current setup. There is no reason to believe that those wanting to dine in one of the four venues will be able to.

We heard many complaints about the Oasis class before they entered service and there were no issues and those ships have been some of the most popular ships in service.

I think everyone needs to let the ships enter service and see how it works out. One area that RCI has done well is working out the on board logistics. I expect no less this time.

It's worse than that - I believe there are 18 dining options and only 5 are included in the fare.

I've cruised with both NCL and RCL and my on-board account always has a bigger total, when I disembark an NCL ships!

Personally I find with NCL that you have to pay for alternative dining if you want an evening meal and service better than mediocre.

I believe there are five which are classed as 'main' dining rooms. Four at located together on decks 3/4. There's not a lot of windows (or not very big windows) I note. The 5th 'Costal Kitchen (deck 14) is for selected cabin grades.

I read that each holds 400 passengers. (Although this might be wrong for Coastal Kitchen'?)

I would agree with that Malcolm. That said the optional dining on NCL is generally very good and we have always budgeted for alternative dinner every night of an NCL cruise. Yes we always make reservations in the morning each day so never a wait and also nothing different than any non sea vacation.

If this progresses, there will only be pay as you go for dining in all cases. No food as part of your cruise package. I'll bet they won't change the prices you pay for the cruise. Your gratuities will be paid as part of your meal bill.
So let say you pay $15X2 for breakfast, $20X2 for lunch and $30X2 for dinner. That's $130/day for food. Times 7 days--$910. I doubt seriously if your cruise fare will drop that much probably NOT at all.
Someone has to pay for all the silly, goofy entertainment features as now seen on RCL's new ships.

Frosty I doubt it will get that bad. Then the lines would have problems with people trying to bring sacks of food with them to economize. Instead of floating resorts they will soon start to look at trailer parks at sea.

By the by someone I know was just on Norwegian Breakaway and said the hot dog cart was no where to be found. Maybe they packed it away for the winter? Also there was no sign of one when I saw the Norwegian Getaway. Personally to keep with the south Florida theme we were looking for a cart for Empanadas. :-/

It was at the entrance to H20 Spice on sunny days and occasionally on the Boardwalk on our trip - but maybe if the weather is not too good it is not used.

Which ship Pam?

Last summer I saw it outside Ocean Blue and a little bit to the aft on the Norwegian Breakaway's waterfront. But a friend who was on the ship this winter said it was no where to be found.

We did not see signs of one on the Norwegian Getaway but in January/February it was snowing in New York and the decks were buried in snow.

This past Saturday I attended an affair held at our TA for RCL Diamond and above members.
A breakfast and them short Thank You for our continued return to RCL cruising. Had one Pinnicle couple(100 sea days/yr.)
We received a 2lb box of candy as well.
They had a talk on the new dining venues on the Quantum ships. I had a chance to talk with the RCL rep about this but he wasn't to thrilled when I told him that this is a HOT topic online.Of course he said the ships aren't even built yet so no judgement should be made.
OK here's what he told us.
5 free dining venues ,each different from each other- same menu for each one each day
4 dining rooms will hold approx. 420 each, 3 will be smart casual and one formal, the 5th will be for Suite passengers only 190 capacity. They can bring in cruisers of a lower cabin(friends/family)
He mentioned about a few new specialty restaurants but no pricing was given.
No mention of buffet (Windjammer) but I assume that will still be available for breakfast and lunch.
Reservations will be needed to insure getting into the dining rooms BEFORE your cruise!!!Book Online just like shore excursions.
I don't recall the capacity of the ship but I dare say you will be forced to visit the $$$ venues!!!
