I LOVE IT this is the best news on a very long time!! So good to see that Azores ex - Athena still will be around And as you write PamM,its good news for Portuscale cruises.... its not many classic ships left so we need to take care of them so they still can be in traffic for many more years Lets hope that Portuscale can make a good charter deal with Porto and Lisboa too.

Athena now Azores in Olden 2012

Pam, Thank you for posting info on Azores cruises from the United Kingdom, As you posted here, Azores is under charter by Ambiente Kreuzfahrten now however Azores had cancelled June North Cape Cruise due to failure to achieve the minimum number of paticipants.
She is scheduled to leave Kiel on Jul 10 on 16 days Arctic Polar summer Greenland & Iceland Cruise.

Galaxy, Do you have any chance to take a photo of her with Black hull when she visits at Hellesylt on August 26 ?

That's a fantastic trip on FUNCHAL - a long one though.
the itineraries and pricing for AZORES next year are here.

Some nice overnights including the Edinburgh Festival and lovely cruises [there is one for the solar eclipse in March too].

CMV cruises have said that they will be crewing the ' Azores ' when her charter starts.

Lets hope her appearence and service standards will be maintained to the same high standards as they are by her present portugese crew !

She'll be crewed by the Global Maritime Group. This company also manages MARCO POLO and ASTOR. CMV belongs to Global as well as TransOcean Kreuzfahrten.
Expect a european / international service-crew and Ukrainian officers. It might well be that Global takes over some of the portugese service-crew currently employed by Portuscale.

Beautiful Galaxy

Perhaps some not so good news for Portuscale. Last night in Australia's Cruise Weekly it was announced that FUNCHAL's Season downunder has been cancelled, due to "unforseen circumstances".

Hi Pam - Appears to be two reasons.

Calls at West Africa on her outward journey to Australia could now be restricted due to the Eloba outbreak which could also affect her earlier cruise to West Africa from Lisbon.

On her homeward cruise it was planed to make it an Ansac 100th anniversary cruise but the Turkish authorities have restricted the numbers attending the Gallipoli event and cruise ships will have to anchor some considerable way from where the event takes place.

This could also affect an Ansac cruise planned by Louis Cruises .

Her outbound voyage to Australia was through the Suez Canal. I am not sure what passengers might think about calling at Guinea Bissau, free of Ebola currently but at risk [says the news] - borders closed.

The number are only limited on land for the ANZAC Day Centenary Commemorations. Cruise ships will anchor some 40km away and have a broadcast of the service, but this is the same for all.

I think the cancellation of Funchal's season down under was more likely due to the lack of adequate lead-in time. The season was initially announced in May - less than 8 months prior to the ship's departure from Europe - and only advertised more widely in the last month or so.

There were also berthing-related issues in Funchal's intended home port of Geelong, where there is currently no proper berth for cruise ships (visiting ships tend to anchor in the bay). This would have been the first turnaround call for a ship of Funchal's size in the port. However, Portuscale were well aware of the problem.

It remains to be seen whether Portuscale will try again in 2015/16 or abandon the idea. A shame it didn't work out this time as they were offering a novel product.
