At this hour, 2:19 a.m. Carnival Victory and Enchantment of the Seas are sitting in Port of Miami. They have not yet been dispatched to sea just yet. Port Canaveral has all ships at sea.

Looking at AIS Data, ALL shipping traffic, personal craft and other, are being directed away from Cuba, off to the South and West. There is hardly ANY traffic in the corridor between Hispanola, Cuba and South Florida. It is open ocean as far as AIS shows.

A good number of cruise ships are NOW en-route South from Port Canaveral and Miami, for those ships that departed later Thursday evening into night fall.

There are some cruise ships heading North to Charleston, but the majority are heading South and West to Cozumel, and Costa Maya (Harmony of the Seas). It seems a very large number of ships from across the field are headed in the same direction until Irma passes and the ships are called home and back into service.

The time table for landfall in South Florida has been pushed up to very early Sunday morning before day break. If hurricane force winds hit the peninsula before sun up, it could prove disastrous, people being in the dark over night and then being plunged into darkness as the storm advances.

Memories of Hurricane Andrew are on my mind as I have friends in North Miami Proper, who are riding the storm out in their high rise apartment buildings just a few miles inland from North Beach. Traffic has been bumper to bumper all day long and gas is running out and so is time for people to get a safe distance from Irma.

Sadly, there really IS NO safe place to go because Irma is tracking, at this hour, right up the peninsula putting Miami into direct hit territory on Sunday Morning.

Our thoughts go with all those who are in harms way and those trying to get out of dodge at this hour.

I will update tomorrow the AIS positioning locations, should any change. Right now all cruise ship traffic is heading away to safe port locations.

An Earthquake has hit the pacific coast of Mexico. The epicentre was about 87km (54 miles) south-west of the town of Pijijiapan and at a depth of 70km, the United States Geological Survey said.

Things do not look good as Hurricane Katia is spinning in the Bay of Campeche and is headed inland towards Mexico proper over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Updates to follow.

I wonder what the sea state is in the Caribbean?
Anyone seen emails from those on ships now?

The last flight on AA took off from MIA at 3:45. The last flight from FLL will take off on Saturday evening. Airports in MIA, FLL, WPB, MCO will close on Saturday and Sunday.

It is reported that the tower at MIA will stay open until winds exceed 55 mph. IRMA is definitely higher.

All flights into affected airports have been cancelled throughout the weekend.

Cruise ports in MIAMI, TAMPA, Key West, FT LAUDERDALE, NASSAU, St. MAARTEN are closed until further notice. Port Miami has shut down as of 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. The Port will go into ZULU lockdown at 8:00 p.m. Friday evening.

All preparations for evacuation should be completed by now. Once the storm hit, rescue and assistance may not be available until safety can be assured. If you need help, call your local fire/rescue. But once again, if you remain in an evacuation zone as of tonight, you take your life into your own hands.
