Paolo...saw this ship in Safaga back in Nov., she must have been built back in the '20s. Still being used for cruising. Have you got her in your archives?

Thanks AJL...good pix too. In fact the first one looks like it may have been taken at Safaga.
The emergency steering aft is interesting...it's hand gear and looks like a big wheel taken from an old sailing ship.
But, the question remains, how do these things still get certificates in this day and age?

Gohaze, I don't know, but I have been wondering about a ship called Hermes. She is built in 1956 and is still cruising. The main point is this: Hermes is registered in Piraeus, and when a ship is 35 years in Greece, it must be withdrawn from service. Hermes is now 45 years. Or does this only mean the ferries?

Gohaze, you are fortunate that AJL posted those photos because unfortunately my archive material on the REGINA MARIS is very scarce.

AJL, thanks for posting those fine photos.

The Regina Maris is the former Argonaut operated for many years by Epirotiki Lines(now Royal Olympic Cruises). The ship performed very interesting themed cruises departing from Italy(Ravenna and Livorno) and calling at very interesting places like Thessaloniki,Kavala and Dikili. The Argonaut was sold five years ago and actually it's the old ship at sea.

AJL, now we have the same number of posts... :-)

Where did you took those fine pictures of the MARIS?

Italiancruiser: The REGINA MARIS is a survivor, so it pridely deserves the title of the oldest cruise ship still active.
The German owned SEA CLOUD of 1931 and the Louis Cruises PRINCESA VICTORIA, ex DUNNOTAR CASTLE of 1936 are other examples of longevity at sea.

The title of being the oldest ocean-going passenger ship goes to the DOULOS, ex FRANCA C, ROMA, MEDINA of 1914.

The REGINA MARIS, which is owned by Regina Maris International Ltd., La Valletta / Malta is cruising under full-charter for Phoenix Reisen GmbH for principally German passengers. The ship does beautiful 1-week turns in the Red Sea which can be combined with a holiday on land in Egypt.
The ship is managed through Memnon Cruises in Cairo. Crew onboard is mainly Egyptian and officers are Russian / Ukrainian. The hotelmanagement is German / Austrian.
Although a very old unit, the ship has been rather well maintained and is still going strong. She has some beautiful interiors and many people like her because she is very small and familiar.

The HERMES is stillcruising for Royal Olympic Cruises. It's a sistership of the JADRAN (now a restaurant-ship in Toronto) and the AMBASSADOR 1 which is cruising to the Galapagos Islands for OdessAmerica Cruise Company.
The HERMES is very old and maintenance is rather poor. She is used mainly for day-cruises and sometimes she is replacing other ships which can't cruise due to refurbishments or technical problems.

Thanks for the info Patrick! Here's a link to Travelpage's page for the Ambassador 1, though there it reads that she would've been built in 1975, which isn't true.

The Iugoslavian trio of 1956-1958 are nice looking ships. Too bad ROC isn't taking good care of the HERMES (ex JUGOSLAVIJA).
She could be sucessfull, for instance, for daytime cruises around the Greek Islands. Example: on the Corinth area, including a passage on the famed canal.
