According to the website with this news
Mercy Ships "Anastasis" will be retired.
A formal "passing the torch" between the Anastasis, and the new "Africa Mercy" will happen on the 4th of June 2006, in Tema, Ghana.

Accordint to the article the ship will be sold, and "all options are open" to ensure the highest price...

"Anastasis" is the former italian "Victoria", one of the more classic and handsome (and oldest- former "blue water" liners still sailing, though in a somewhat new disguise, as hospital and mercy ship.

It was to be expected, and Alang will be beckoning.

Africa Mercy is an ex Danish train ferry, built in 1980 as Dronning Ingrid. Her history is on Fakta om Fartyg, with links at the bottom of that page to several pages of current interior photos during her refit. The train tracks can be seen on the final page.

from FOF

Anastasis would have to retire soon anyway [however sad] and I am sure Africa Mercy will be a far more suitable vessel for their purpose.

Caribbean Mercy, being retired too, is the 1952 Hurtigrute vessel Polarlys, also see FOF.

Yes so sorry to hear about the Anastasis retiring. This ship has been used in a might way to touch people lives.

I am with a group working on a project with the ship Marine Star also known as the Aquarama. A christian Mission University at Sea project. Take a look at the site and keep praying www.marinestar.org

It is indeed sad that two classics will be retired, in flavor of a more modern ferry...ops I meant ship. I would have prefered two smaller modern ships.

I wonder how AFRICA MERCY's seaworthiness is compared to her former predeccesor

Thanks for showing this, Pam - I always wondered if those Danish train ferries could be converted. I guess they can.

MERCY SHIP SET TO GO
April 10, 2006

A HOSPITAL ship funded by transport tycoon Ann Gloag is ready to set sail.

The 16,500-ton former ferry, named Africa Mercy, will set off for Ghana within weeks after being fitted with operating theatres, wards and CT scan machines.

Stagecoach boss Ann donated £4million towards the cost of the refit. The ship will give free medical and dental care to thousands of Africans who have no access to a doctor.

Dozens of NHS staff will help out on the ship during holiday breaks.

Former nurse Ann said: "The needs of the African people are enormous."
