Here is an interesting fact from a cruise- trade magazine, not normally for public consumption:

For decades Cruises Lines have had problems providing fresh eggs on their ships. Cruise passengers of course have an insatiable appetite for omelettes, fried, poached and boiled eggs for breakfast. The motion of the sea has tended to damage the eggs and turn them bad quickly. Freezing techniques render the eggs virtually tasteless. Powdered egg cannot successfully be used for breakfast choices.

However the problem has been solved, by an innovative design which is featured in all the ships of a leading Cruise Line (renown for their excellent food). Deep within the hull of all their ships, where only the crew have access, lies the secret. As well as having there own power plants, garbage disposal and desalination plants, they have an onboard chicken roost. The whole process is very environmentally friendly. The chickens are fed on the customers left over food. Hundreds of fresh eggs are produced on a daily basis at sea.

In addition, at the end of the Cruise, when the freezer supplies are getting low, fresh meat is then easily available. In fact nothing is wasted, the gases produced by the animals are recycled and used, in part, to assist power the galley ovens.

This clever idea has helped give this particular cruise line the 'edge' over all the others, in terms of excellent cuisine. Now that the secret is out, other Cruise lines are now trying to follow this lead. It is rumoured than a very important 'proposed' newbuild will have extensive facilities onboard for keeping a range of farm-yard animals, including cows and sheep. They would be used as a dual purpose, food supplies and a Childrens Zoo. By-products would include woolen and leather crafts being made onboard. Fact IS stranger than fiction!

Ascendency, joking aside, the area of the ship in question is below the waterline and is well sound-proofed - after all the engines and generators occupy some of this space too.

Malcolm, are you sure you didn't see that info in the National Inquirer??? I've been to the bowels of QE-2 and I know she does not have chickens. In fact I have seen the crated eggs come aboard. I wonder what ship it is the article is talking about? I have also been to the bowels of the Crystal Harmony, and never come across this interesting concept.

Malcolm, you actually sound serious or is it delirious. Check my reply under your similar posting in the Cruise Lines Section.

Hi Barry, I don't think that the article is refering to the existing Cunard or Crystal ships?

Of course It's serious! (No it was not from the national Inquirer).

sorry Malcolm, I didn't mean to come across as thinking that you made up this story or fell for some silly story in one of those tabloids. It's actually an interesting idea. But it would have to be on a really big ship, because there would have to be additional space for slaughtering the chickens and cows.

Maybe my joke was not so far from the truth. I have just read this fact:
"Norddeutscher Lloyd's pre-First World War liners on the North Atlantic run carried aquaria to ensure that first-class passengers always had fresh fish on the menu".

Malcolm - what is aquaria? I know aqua is water so do you mean they carried fresh water for the fish?

Malcolm...carrying fresh supplies like that was common in the old days
A typical load for the Sobraon, of Devitt & Moore - a sailing ship carrying passengers on the Australian run - was....3 milking cows, 3 bullocks, 90 sheep,50 pigs, over 300 chickens geese ducks and turkeys.
the menu for Christmas dinner 1890 - 76 days after leaving London was:
Soup Mock Turtle
Mutton Cutlets a la Reform
Stewed Oyster Curried Prawns
Oxford Sausages and Mashed Potatoes
Jugged Hare & Jelly
Cutlets a la Prince de Galles
Curried Eggs
Roast Duck (stuffed)
Boiled Ham & Sauce Piquant
Roast Haunch of Mutton & Jelly
Corned Leg of Pork & Peas Pudding
Green Peas, French Beans
Mashed & Baked Potatoes
Plum Pudding
Mince Pies
Gooseberry Meringue
Trifles & Jellies

And remember this was done whilst the ship was "running the Easting down"

She had 80 pax that trip.
