Does anyone know why her mast has been removed ? Latest pic on Maritime Matters shows her "topless".

I believe her mast has been missing for several years. In March, 2002 while under tow to the reserve fleet at Suisun Bay, her mast snapped off above the radar when it hit the Carquinez Bridge. She was returned to San Francisco where apparently the rest of the mast was removed. Other, older photos on Maritime Matters show her without the entire mast.

Microsoft Virtual Earth clearly shows the mast stored on the starboard side of the foredeck.

Sitting here in my office about 200 feet form her bow, her mast has been removed for years and is sitting on her foredeck. The base is still there, but looks like the mast was hacked off. I watch over her everyday, rust streaked and bare, she is still a classic
