Dream on !
I bet when they have cut her up someone will say "We could still buy all of the pieces and put them back together again".
"Everything has it's time".

I can hardly wait to see what those wacky Chinese 'decorators' have in mind for her!
Wonderful ship who has served the world well,...can't we just leave it at that?

1]It delayed Rotterdam V by a year and was close to being lost. It cost 2x or higher to restore as planned
2] The Blue Lady would not have all the damage to the artworks.
Peter Knego would have rescued them by now and we all could have had a vanity, etched panel, ash tray etc.
Meanwhile the ship is getting close to the condition of the SS America and may suffer the same fate.
Goossens, if you or your ditto heads are reading this, the enemy of my enemy is not my friend.

I absolutely agree!!!Let her die with some sort of dignity.
One thing you seem to forget is the way the workers in Alang will be contaminated by the asbestos on the ex ss Norway if she is allowed to be broken up there.
The ex ss Norway should have been banned from being brought there in the same way as happened with the French aircraft carrier which had less asbestos on board.
Although I have souvenirs from many ships I would never buy a souvenir from that ship, if she was broken up at Alang, knowing that many people could die as a result of her being broken up there by workers without the correct protective clothing for the handling of asbestos..

Some Alang workers have been trained in the safe removal of asbestos, in France.
But anyway, does anyone know how many workers may have died in building ss France? I would guess more than may die in dismantling her, or were killed whilst working aboard.
Pam
I have respect for people in third world countries having travelled all over the world and have seen the conditions a lot of them live and work in.
There is no way that the American authorities would allow the ss Norway to be broken up in the USA, with all that asbestos on board, unless the removal of it was controlled, which it is not in India.
Get your souvenir , if she is broken up at Alang, but also spare a thought for the many workers that will die if she is broken up there.
Yes, the conditions for these workers are appalling, but let's not get caught up with one ship and ignore all the others, if that is what this crusade is all about.

To raise false hopes and make it more difficult for all those who loved this ship is bad enough - but to abuse the concerns about the disposal of the hazardous materials for this very doubtful and seemingly endless campaign is hypocritical and obscene.
I very much doubt that this topic would have been brought up in the context of a refit or conversion to a static ship by those people who now depict themselve as the advocate of those poor workers in India.
As for the end of the Norway, am I the only one to think there is some kind of appeal, in this limbo, in this slow decaying, but still subsisting of this great and majestic in decay hulk ? a bit like the 18th/19th century romanticist fascination for ruins.France will never have her young, optimist 60's optimistic and chic splendor again, but somehow she is a grand ruin (would we otherwise be fascinated by these Alang pictures and reports ?)
France/Norway is not a living being, let's not anthropomorph her, but a great product of human creativity, fantasy and productivity. She was great in splendor, and now great in ruin. I don't want her scrapped, but also not necessarily restored.
It could have been different, but it is not now.

Yes, yes, yes, we all know how you've been around the world upteen thousand times and have the upper hand when it comes to knowing everything there is to know about, well, everything. You make it a point to tell us time and time again.
Yes, I'll keep collecting bits of the France/Norway; and, yes, I may occasionally think of the poor souls who may loose their lives while scrapping her. I know I'll do this because every time I look at my Lusitania collection, I think of the terrible events of May 7, 1915. I also think about the thousands and thousands of GI's who DIDN'T come home on the Queens Mary or Elizabeth. Or perhaps how every time I look at the hundred or so items I have from Wilhelm Gustloff it reminds me of the over 10,000 refugees who were murdered by the Russians. Or the 5,000-plus from the Cap Arcona, or the 3,000-plus from the Gen. V. Steuben,...I could go on and on but, hopefully, you get the message.
The items I have in my collection not only give me joy, they also make me pause and think of their origin and their circumstance. Having them, touching them, and enjoying them is a great way to pay tribute to not only the people who lost their lives, but also to the people who created them in the first place. BOTH are equally important.
Too bad your sanctimonious attitude doesn't allow you to see it that way,....
I share your views about the fascination for ruins as a former romantic!Indeed, I 'd love to see some pictures of her slowly ryusting..she might end up like ssAmerica and be a memorial to Asbestos in 20 years time!
