I like the SS Norway (Ex SS France)..shes a classic liner and shes still in service! Her Art Deco interiors are much better, in my opinion, than those of the QE2. I probably like the 'Queen Mary' even better than the Norway...she makes a great day trip, but a cruise is out of the question!

Hello,
my favorite ship is TS MAXIM GORKIY of Sovcomflot, Moscow. She was build in the best German tradition and has a very good comfort and offers lots of space, especially the cabins are extremely large.
And, it still looks like a real ship which is not so oversized like many modern ones.

Tough question - I would say that my favorite ship is the Queen Mary because this is the ship that inspired and sparked my fascination with ocean liners. I also got engaged on the Queen Mary in Long Beach on May 25th 1997! I went to college in California from Minnesota, because the Queen Mary was not far away from my school. Second runner up would be the SS United States, since I do have a set of detailed deck plans that are six feet long posted on my wall in my office. The ss United States was built to be the "perfect liner" by William Francis Gibbs who studied ships his whole life and used his accumulation of knowledge to build the BIG U. My favorite Cruise company is Celebrity Cruises, because they are so inovative and they work very hard to be the best they can be. Their ships also have an art deco flare similar to the trans-Atlantic era.

Although her interiors were nothing to write home about (I've seen some pictures), I'd have to give the edge to the Big U because of her magnificently sleek lines (not to mention her achievements), with the Normandie and Queen Mary coming in a close second and third.

Then of course, there's the Olympic class, but they were in a league all their own.

Obviously, one cannot sail any of these vessels anymore (although the possibility, however remote, still exists for the Big U), so my favorite line at this point is Princess - modern, yet tasteful design, great food and service.

I'll have to cast an additional vote for the SS Norway. As a ballroom dancer, the Norway has the largest and most in number of dance floors of the 5 ships we have cruised. (RCI Majesty OTS, Legend OTS, Enchantment OTS and NCL Dream(ward).

The closed promenade, art-deco decor and general ambiance take me back to a simpler, less hetic time.

Favorite Ship? EASY...the t/n CRISTOFORO COLOMBO, favorite company, "Italia" S.p.A. di Navigazione, or, "Italian Line"...The best ever, with amazing antecedents, the Navigazione Generale Italiana, Lloyd Sabaudo and Cosulich, S.T.N., owners of the marvellous motorliner VULCANIA. My eyes never saw better looking ships than the ships of that company. Sometime I will rave on and on about Italian Line in a book, but right now I am working on too many manuscripts for my American Merchant Marine History Series.

Hi...today, it has to be the Marco Polo. A real ship (I remember a couple of women on a BB complaining because the camber and sheer made the decks slope) with an excellent crew and an itinerary that takes a lot of beating.

It's hard to choose a ship - the Line is easy, HOLLAND AMERICA.
We've sailed all the 'dam' and look forward to the new additions.

Honeymooned on the old Statendam in '77, sailed the first Inaugural on the 'new' Statendam - but then there's the Noordam - Ft. Lauderdale all the way to Vancouver in '88 - she's a lovely little ship!.

We're on the Statendam again - 16 days from now.....thinking about dusting the luggage off this weekend!

I would have to say the QE2 is our favourite ship. We have sailed on her four times and have loved every cruise.

17 of our family went on the Norway just after she was refurbished a few years ago and i thought the food and service was better than the old Carnivale but I saw signs of aging (they were replacing some of her teak decking) cracked Plexyglass doors and her two outside pools were very tiny and crowded. My room looked too plain but comfortable. Her dining rooms were splendid though! Very impressed. At least they showed some height with a descending staircase and not like the QE2 with its "cafeteria" look and low ceilings!

My vote goes to HAL's new ROTTERDAM VI,which had it's Maiden Voyage in 1998. I joined the World Cruise that year and sailed from Rio De Janeiro to New York(14 days). I had the most wonderful cruise all due to the terrific people I met and made friends with.Best of all,we still keep in touch with phone calls and letters and 3 of us are planning another HAL cruise in 2000. But I digress.... The new Rotterdam is a magnificent ship. The furnishings are superb, the cabins are roomy and well-equipped,lots of closet space. And the staff are just a joy. One word of advice with regards to the Indonesian crew members.... learn a few words in Indonesian and you will be surprised at their reaction. I have always been treated like a princess by the crew but after learning some Indonesian, they started to treat me like a Queen and nothing was too much trouble. The food is usually first-class and always presented beautifully.Since this first World Cruise on the Rotterdam,I have sailed 3 times this past year,(1999),once on the World Cruise(Aukland to Bali),then on the TransAtlantic crossing(Big Band)to Lisbon and then finally the Aegean Odyssey(Venice etc)...all on this wonderful Rotterdam. I am looking forward to returning to her next year and renewing some friendships not only with the passengers but with her wonderful crew. When any of you go on this ship be sure to check out the Odyssey Restaurant.Reservations have to be made but there is no extra charge as in the case with other cruise lines. So enjoy!!!!

This is really tough. Our favorite
liner is of the past SS LEONARDO DAVINCI, my husband sailed on it long before he met me. The SS NORWAY, SS FLAVIA, SS AMERIKANIS.
All very wonderful and I miss the later 2 very much. I wish I had taken more interior photos of them
when I did. Although we are getting
ready to sail on a treasure, the
S/S REMBRANDT one month from now. I'm sure I'll get a big kick out of that too. What a shame, that HAL, seems to be the only line that tries
to stick to the way it was. And Premier tries to save the liners of
the past. I'm hoping we get to sail
on the former S/S EUGENIO C next fall. Another treat to behold. LONG MAY OUR OLDER LINERS SAIL!!!!!!

Our favorite ship is the first one we ever went on - the Pacific Princess - down the Mexican Riviera - you can't be the first cruise you went on. We had seen it in Acapulco the year before and thought it would be great to be able to spend a week on that " huge " ship.
Eighteen cruises later we still like the ship but now it looks pretty tiny.
My favorite company is Celebrity because I think the food and service is excellent. My wife likes Holland America first and Celebrity second. She thinks that Holland America has those extra touches that make a cruise memorable.

I sailed on the Leonardo da Vinci twice in my teens and it was a wonderful ship. Also sailed on the old Statendam, the Italia and the Homeric of Home Lines. Last year took the family on the QE2 and had a wonderful time.

But my favorite will remain the Leonardo - a beautiful graceful ship and a spectacular kitchen.

Next stop the Caronia from Civatavecchia in August.
