Sorry this topic is not as interesting as many of the others but I figure that if anyone would know the answer to my question, someone on here would or would know where to find out.

The SS Norway was due for a major refit following her eastbound transatlantic in March. Since Norway reviews are few and far between, I'm curious if this scheduled refit has indeed happened.

My wife and I sailed the Norway in January and are booked on the westbound transatlantic in August. Just wondering if (and hoping that) NCL only spruced-up and did not alter the existing.

The refit that changed Checker's to Sport's Illustrated with the addition of neon lighting and a gazillion tv screens was, I suppose, necessary to support the sports theme cruises. I just hope this trend does not continue into the Club Internationale and the North Cape Lounge.

Hello Renegade4!
I don't have your answer but like you, i hope Club International would remain unchanged. This is a so magic place! In the Club International i had the feeling to have a unique moment! All the (great) history of this ship ("my" FRANCE) and of many others liners thronged in my head. It was magic and i wanted to stay here for the rest of my life! I had the same feeling in the Windward dining room.
Bye.

Greetings Viccaro,

I just glanced at your profile for this site and, since you hail from France, I can understand why the SS France (Norway) would hold a VERY special place for you.

I think I was born for a much simplier time than we live in now. Not having experienced 6 (or 7 if you include the rendezvous with the total solar eclipse) days at sea, I can only imagine what it will be like to not have to rush through breakfast to catch up with a shore excursion; to stroll the enclosed, and on fair days, the open promenade with the most pressing problem being what to order for dinner; to ballroom dance the night away on the real wood floor in the Club Internationale rather than on a 3 meter diameter piece of marble in a chrome-plated atrium.

This is not to say that I would pass up the opportunity to cruise on one of the modern ships, but all cruise comparisons will, from now on, be with the SS Norway.

Renegade4 (anxiously awaiting his next "journey back in time".)

I had heard that she was drydocked in April for the refit, but I don't remember where. Maybe NCL's site???

Anyway, I'm anxiously awaiting her arrival in New York for one last (sniff sniff!) visit so that I can take some pictures of this majestic vessel for a scrapbook that I am putting together, filled with pictures of the greatest ships the world has ever seen. Obviously, some of those I'll never be able to photograph, i.e., Normandie, Queen Elizabeth, etc.

I sailed on the Norway's April 3, 1999 eastbound transatlantic crossing. It was a real joy. (I had last crossed on her in the fall of 1968 from Southampton to New York.) According to discussions I had with the crew, she was set to sail direct from Marseilles to Bremerhaven (without passengers) to spend 30 days in dry dock. I was told she was due for lots of routine maintenance. Nobody mentioned anything in the way of a major refit. One crew member said he thought they would turn the Club Internationale into a "Reggae bar" in preparation for the Norway's extended stay in the Caribbean. However, other crew members had not heard of this. It's hard for me to believe that NCL would ruin one of the most cherished public spaces on this great liner. The westbound transatlantic crossing in August 1999 sounds like a real treat. As discussed elsewhere in Cruise Talk, it may be her last crossing, at least for a long while.

If NCL messes around with one of the most "period" public spaces on the Norway, the Club Internationale I think I'll jump overboard on the crossing and join the Titanic.

I heard that the disco and the North Cape Lounge were due to be spruced-up. Please NCL, don't destroy the best dance floors we have found on the ships we have cruised.

I don't have a clue about the Norway's possible refit. However, I do know that just about every cruise lines priority is selling liquor! If this means distroying historic public rooms...they will. They have all done it before! (That's how the Norway lost it's Library).

The QE2 even has a mock English pub. If you have ever been in a English pub you will realise that it's nothing like a 'real' pub!

I'm afraid that 'style and taste' seem to have no place in the Millenium!

I suspect that maybe one of the reasons that the Norway is being relocated permanently to the Caribean is that they sell more drinks in the hot climate compared to Europes varying climate(?)

I took my first cruise in Feb. on board the Norway. My aunt, who is a travel agent, took me as a graduation present. She had been on just about every other cruise line, but this was her first experience with NCL. We were both pleased with the trip in general and our accomodations. I think that a lot of my enjoyment came from exploring the ship the first day. Our tablemates had been on the ship seven or eight times, and said that it gets better every time. We stayed on the pool deck, and the rocking wasn't too bad. It woke me up the first night because I wasn't used to it, but every other night I welcomed it.

Yep. But that pub was a bar, the Theatre Bar, before it became a pub. It's not like they ripped out the Library to add yet another bar.
