Hello,
Here's a new trivia regarding our dear old liners:
Few liners, especially around the begining of the century, had one stack wich was dummy, among them TITANIC's class or NORMANDIE. At this time, the funnel's number was very important in the appearence of ships. It meant strenght and trust But wich liners with three stacks(two sisters) had not one but TWO stacks wich were dummies? Only the central one was a real stack.
Bye.

Good question...I've no idea!

But I do know that even now dummy stacks are still used. Disney Magic and Disney Wonder both have a forward dummy stack, which contains public rooms.

I always thought that the single stack on the QE2 looked rather oversized and odd!

Imagine that! A true liner with but one funnel. I agree, the overall effect is rather bizarre, but there is precedent for it, e.g., Carpathia, et al.

P.S. You've got me there, Vaccaro. I haven't a clue either. The only ones that come to mind are possibly the Imperator and Vaterland, but I think the funnels actually worked on these two. Other than that, I would venture the Ile de France, but I fear that I have not done enough research on her (or as the French would have it, him) to say so with any real confidence.

Hello,
Well, just one tip to help you: these were Cunard's liners. (I'm reading a book about Cunard's history for few days,so...)
The answer tomorrow.
Bye.

okay, the only other ships that
could have the dummy funnels would
possibly be the rms queen mary
and the rms queen elizabeth.
i don't think the lusitania, mauritania and aquatania had those
dummy funnels at that time.
and i agree, the queen elizabeth 2
has an odd funnel. but stop and think, the europa and the britannic of the 1940' or 50's had
squat looking funnels. now that was really different.

believe perhaps 2 Anchor/Cunard ships. Names
that sound familiar are California, Cameronia, Transylvania, etc. Dont have my ref material in front of me at work. Also, the first two Strath liners of P&O were later
remodeled and lost their 1st and 3rd funnels but I dont remember how many of those were the "dummies"

Hello,
Mark: good job!...you have the half of the right answer.
TRANSYLVANIA was one of thes two ships.
CAMERONIA and CALIFORNIA were Anchor/Cunard's liner too, but they had only one funnel. 579ft X 69ft, 16792grt, 16.1kts, 2760 passengers. Steam turbines, twin screw.

Barryboat: Bingo! You have the right answer.
CALEDONIA and TRANSYLVANIA, 1925, 17046grt, 552ft X 70ft, 16kts, 1408 pass, steam turbines, twin screw.
Thanks to these three funnels (and the shape of course), they were known as ones of the best-looking Atlantic liners in the 20s.

Congratulations for all the searches, you and the others (Malcolm, Joe, Dambrosi), you did.
Bye.
