We were just on the Rembrandt (former HA Rotterdam and saw some other "old ships" in ports....The Sunbird (which looked like a Royal Caribbean to me) and the Don Juan (thought it might be an NCL) Can anyone help on this?

I believe the Sunbird was RCCL's Song of America. Can't help you with the Don Juan.

Not sure about the Don Juan, but the Sunbird is definitely an old RCCL ship, I think maybe the Song of America. I haven't looked at her picture, so I'm not totally sure, but I think I've seen that elsewhere on this site.

Hello! The DON JUAN you refered to used to sail on 2 and 5 day cruises from Florida as
the CROWN DEL MAR for Crown Cruise Lines.
She is a former Spanish ro-ro ferry. The former NCL ships in the Med are Royal Olympic's TRITON (also CUNARD ADVENTURER) and
First European's BOLERO(STARWARD). What other ships did you see and did you enjoy the REMBRANDT? Happy cruising!!

Hello,
Yes, Toms is right. DON JUAN is a former spanish ferry. She was built (at Valencia, Spain) in 1967 as LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA for the Cia Trasmediterranea for the line Barcelona/Canaries. I took a photograph of her while a call i made at Barcelona in june 87 when i was in the French Navy.
She was bought by Crown Cruise Lines in 86 and renamed CROWN DEL MAR after conversion into a cruise ship. She was renamed DON JUAN by Royal Hispania Cruises in 94. I have ever seen her in 95 at Nice in France. She was the same type as the OCEAN MAJESTY originally (ex JUAN MARCH , 1966).
428.6ft X 63ft. 16.292GRT, 17kts, 11776kw, 487 passengers for 195 crew.
Bye.

Glad to see that there is still interest in the CROWN DEL MAR. Sailed on her out of Palm Beach FL in 1990. She was replaced by CROWN MONARCH, a newbuild, which was never really successful out of Palm Beach. Interesting that the Crown Cruise Line name has been resurrected.

I addition to toms other NCL ships in the med, Aitours' Seawing (Southward) and First European/Featival's Flamenco are still is service. I think there are more in addition to this.
Ps what were your impressions of the sunbird?

Dear Tom S,
We enjoyed the cruise aboard the Rembrandt tremendously. The ports were great. The food was the worst thing about the cruise. It was our 11th cruise since 1993 and it was the worst food! Actually, dinners were OK but the buffets for breakfast and lunch were just same old some old. And breakfast in the diningroom was the pits, too. On the Med. itinerary, most shore excursions left before 8:00 and one needed to eat quickly...never go to the diningroom for that. As far as price was concerned, it was a great cruise.
The Rembrandt was a beautiful ship but I guess I'm one of those cruisers who just enjoys "new" more. We love Princess (the Crown) and Celebrity (any ship). Happy cruising to you, too. We always cruise at New Year's but have decided to forget it this year and sail at the REAL Millenium 2000-2001. Our next one is Alaska in 2000 aboard the Dawn Princess.
