We were driving over the Walt Whitman Bridge today and noticed the Big U had some very bright white lights on, on one of her upper decks? Does anybody know what's that's all about? I've never seen her with any lights on her at all in the past. We've gone by her in the dark and she hasn't had to such as a candle to light her up. Is there any news?

Rumor has it that 'Joe' has purchased her with the profits from Travelpage.com, and is currently residing there.

Once he has settled in, he has promissed to invite us all round for Coffee!

Malcolm,

...I told you to keep that under wraps until I got the coffee service in place.

We are still having problems trying to locate the interior of the ship - it seems someone removed it some time ago.

See below:

As soon as we find it I promise to invite all aboard for a tour.

Joe, you are aware that some of the interiors of 'Olympic'were purchased and displayed in the 'White Swan' in Alnwick, Northumbria (UK.

The then owner of White Swan Hotel who had been a frequent passenger on the liner, successfully bid for the woodpanelling and ceiling from the First Class Lounge, the Second Class Staircase and the revolving door from the liner's Restaurant. The fittings from the First Class Lounge can now be seen in the hotel's 'Olympic Suite' and the staircase now leads up to the hotel's first floor. The revolving door now forms part of the main entrance.

Maybe the SS United States fixtures and fittings are in someones lounge? Anything is possible!

For more info see: http://www.ejr.ndo.co.uk/whiteswan.html

Malcolm, that's a great idea.

I will begin my search immediately by visiting a lounge on my way home this evening. If I don't find them tonight I vow to continue searching lounges - near and far - until I find the missing interiors of my new home.

Wish me luck...

Joe at TravelPage.com

P.S. By the way isn't that the same paneling that Celebrity bought to use on the Millennium? Is the White Swan still around?

Hey Joe,
Here's an idea...If Premier goes under then you could take the interior of the Rembrandt and put in the Big U. Then we could all have High Tea in The Queens Lounge on the Big U!!
LOL

Only the best. I bet that was a beautiful sight to see Geno-R, hope
you took some photos, I would have.

Hey Dambrosi, how did you know I LOVE Asti Spumante. Didn't get to take pics, we were on the bridge moving along and didn't expect to see lights on.

Dambrosi,
The Asti Spumante sounds great, but will Joe have to hire a full service crew to take care of all of us?

Joe, do we have to tip or is this one on you?

Richard

Thanks for the laughs on a Friday night, guys! I enjoyed the discussion about the Big-3 Trans-Atlantic Sisters, and then chuckled my way all the way through this one! It's great to see how our multi-national crew get along here. And even exchange valuable cruise information from time to time!

I heard that the Big U has her engines intact but can they run ? Could you start her up like an old car with a new battery and gas or was too much ripped out of her to do anything, I know her bridge is nothing but a vacant room now but what about her engine room ?

..... Joe I hope your not sleeping on the cold floor if you still have not locate the interiors, I have an old couch you can use that may go a long way in filling the 990 foot long ship !....

HEEEEEEYYYYYY, Geno-R, I had no idea
you liked Asti Spumante, it's the
drink of choice for all of us cruisers. If you're going on a cruise like that lovely liner, you
simply have to have the best.
By the way, my husband thinks this is meaning the generators are in good shape. We will also contribute
a couple of lamps to keep the ball
rolling here. And a coffee table.
LOL LOL LOL

All absolutely hysterical!

geno-r, those lights have actually been up on her since last 4th of July, when a local artist was permitted to bathe the vessel's upper decks in bright lighting for the holiday weekend. Maybe they're testing things out a week early?

Re; the Wood paneling off the Olympic,
It was reported in our papers that it had been installed in a private house in England since being scrapped, The elderly owners have since sold it to a shipping line of which I can,t remember but it was to be installed in "their" new ship... B

Thanks Baker, that ship must be Celebrities Millenium! I wonder how much they paid?

The panels may well still be in the White Swan?

Thank you Joe. That answers the mystery. They must not be on all the time though because when we went on The Spirit dinner cruise last year in August she was as dark as outer space when we sailed past her at night.

They actually do some light maintenance on her regularly just to keep her clean enough to remain viable as a profit vehicle. Maybe that's another reason the lights are on, and she might have been dark because no one was doing any work on her at the time.

Joe

P.S. Draikar, I suspect that they'd have their hands full trying to get those engines running again. I used to have problems getting a lawnmower started after over a year of inactivity; I can imagine that getting the old girl's engines to start after all this time could be a herculean effort.

The panelling installed on board Celebrity's "Millenium" was purchased from the owners of a private house in England who had installed it many years before. The whereabouts of the panelling had been a mystery for many years until the elderly owners of the house died (I believe) and the panelling was put up for sale. The asking price was very high (thank James Cameron for that!) and it was eventually purchased by Celebrity. The panelling is from the Olympic's a la carte restaurant which was an alternative dining room for first class passengers on the Olympic. The items that are installed in the White Swan Hotel (in Alnwick, England and still operating today) are not the same items. The White Swan has some of the stairways, being either the Forward or Aft main stairways from First Class, plus some panelling from the First Class main lounge. I believe there are some pictures on one of the websites mentioned above. I noted that the ceiling and light fittings in the Millenium's Olympic Restaurant are recreations of the original ceiling of the Olympics First Class restaurant.
