QE2 in minor collision in New York's Hudson River

Updated 6:32 PM ET July 5, 2000

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The QE2 luxury liner collided Wednesday with a Japanese
warship that then hit a British warship in a minor incident on the Hudson River off
Manhattan, said the U.S. Coast Guard and Cunard, which owns the passenger ship.

"The QE2 was being brought out of mooring when there was a collision with the
Kashima," the Coast Guard said in a statement. There were no injuries in the incident.

Paint on both vessels was scraped, and the Kashima in turn collided with a British
warship, the Manchester, the Coast Guard said.

"We sent an investigating team over," said a Coast Guard official, who interviewed
the captain. "But it's not an unusual occurrence. It was nothing more than a touch," he
said.

Cunard said damage was limited to paint on the Kashima and QE2 and a damaged
railing on the passenger ship. The QE2 was set to depart for a trans-Atlantic crossing
Wednesday night, said Cunard Line Ltd. director of corporate communications Bruce
Good.

The incident occurred when the cruise ship was being brought in to dock on
Manhattan's West Side after being moored in New York harbor for the July 4th
OpSail 2000 event Tuesday. The Kashima and Manchester were in New York for
the OpSail event.

The QE2 only has a scratch down one side, no need for dry dock. She's on schedule.
