I can give you an answer on that one , I took that Picture (I am Jochen Gielen from Belgium) while I was in Southampton , It was on the 14th of April 2000 and the reason for that flag is because it was on the 14th and 15th of April 1912 that Titanic sunk , it's an homour to the crew of Titanic

Did you take that photo with a special lens, the kind with half color rose on top and clear on the bottom giving it an illuminating look ?

Billee, you can thank Cunardcoll for that photo.... He took it when the ship was in Southampton on the anniversary of Titanic.

Draikar - The photo above I got from a friend who was just on the QE2 - I will ask her how she took it...

Beautiful photographs!!

Just a curiosity...why are we cruise lovers so attracted to those funnels?? There are almost more pictures of just that on the exterior shots of the QE2 here than any other single "part."

I just ask that because when I got back from my cruise, people made fun of the fact that I had soooooo many pictures of the funnel...(Kinda like I had almost two rolls of film worth of pictures of the Tower Bridge in London when I went there a few years ago...ha!)

Is this our "eye-candy?"

Beautiful pictures. Now that is an Ocean Liner. Saw her in Lisbon 10 years ago - we were docked behind her on the Westerdam.

Because the ship is so beautiful, and the funnel is part of that.

I'd like to relate a bit of my adventures when I did a transatlantic crossing on the QE2 back in late summer 1988. I and my friends had booked, of course, "Transatlantic Class" (the euphemism back then for Tourist Class). Regardless of the traditionally retained First Class/Tourist Class accommodations, most passengers were allowed in virtually all the public rooms (meaning First Class) if just for a look around. There were not that many restricted rooms, and a very discreet sign off to the side would remind one that they were "reserved" for First Class passengers (such as the Queen's Room).

Our first full day at sea, we hit a mounting storm, and even though the captain took her a bit off course to skirt around it, at its height in the evening, we had waves of 40 feet. The stabalizers kept her from rolling, but she pitched like a bunking bronco. Fortunately, I had the transderm patch (I get seasick if I stir my coffee too fast), but my friends did not, so I went to supper in the Mauretania (at that time, the Tourist Class dining room) Restaurant alone. Although the room could seat 500+ (there were two seatings for Tourist), it was practically abandoned, with only 40 or so diners scattered throughout the immense room. As the ship continued to wildly pitch, people began to gravitate and move to other tables, forming larger groups and having a great deal of fun. Giddy from it all, a dinner role war actually broke out, and the stewards (those able to still work) brought out more ammunition which went flying across the room. After supper, we went to the Double-Down Room (then the Tourist Class lounge), but dancing was canceled because of the teeter-tottering floor. So the party moved back to the disco, where a contest began to see who could stand perfectly straight the longest without toppling over (stewards stood on either side to catch the contestants). It was all a great deal of fun, especially since the fully-booked QE2 appeared virtually deserted, the vast majority of passengers having taken refuge in their cabins.

By the following day, the storm was over, and except for an occasional rogue wave or two, the sailing was fairly calm. However, since we had gone off course, the captain opened her engines and we sailed at 30+ knots for the day to put her back on schedule, the vibration at the stern incredible. The crystal shop located in the mall surrouding the upper level of the Double-Down Room had to close because the shrieking rattling of glass.

An evening or so later, I discovered that there was a problem of First Class/Tourist Class interloping, not from Tourist to First, but the other way around. As lovely as the Queen's Room (the First Class Lounge) was, it had a stuffy atmosphere, and most passengers, save for a few elderly, prefered the entertainment in the Double-Down Room one deck higher, directly over the Queen's Room. That evening, I simply wanted to read, but the library was closed for the day, and I couldn't go to the Double-Down Room because it was packed to overflowing. So I decided, what the heck, and I went into the Queen's Room where only a handful of First Class passengers sat about, most ignoring the orchestra performing dance music. A steward saw me and smiled, knowing full well I was not booked First Class, but he got me a drink anyway. And then I noticed that the ceiling of the room, over which was the Double-Down's dance floor, was bouncing up and down to the beat of hundreds of feet stamping on it.

It was such a marvelous crossing, one I hope to repeat again someday.
