I would have to say the Conte di Savoia. Although she did not have the speed of the Rex, her cruiser stern and beautifully balanced appearance made her a magnificant looking ship. It is a great tragedy that neither her nor the Rex survived WW2.

Most definitely the Leonardo da Vinci,
externally. Internally, Cristoforo Colombo.
These were two of the most beautiful post
war liners ever built.

whilst not really italian the ANGELIA LAURO was a pretty good looking ship. My favourite have to be GALILEO and MARCONI. I must admit there are not many ugly ships from Italy MICHEALANGELO, OCEANIC, LEONARDO DA VINCI the list goes on . Have a look at The Costa Liner by Maurizio Eliseo and Poalo Piccione or Passenger Liners Italian Style by William Miller both available from Anthony Cooke booksellers in U.K details in Ships Monthly.

Externally, without hesitation the Leonardo da Vinci. The "Mike & Ralph" are close seconds. Different, but beautiful. Not really Italian...or for that matter not really an ocean liner...the Victoria of the old Incres Line. Beautiful lines and a beautiful interior. Wish they still made ships like her!

Fun question...how does one measure "best" in a case where the ships are long gone. For external appearance, ANDREA DORIA and twin CRISTOFORO COLOMBO might be the most beautiful objects ever built...Also great beauties were the GIULIO CESARE and DUILIO of the early 1920s. Internally, the best First Class ever fitted into a pair of ocean liners was in the VULCANIA and SATURNIA (as built and originally fitted)...Sumptuous, almost over-decortaed was the interior of the CONTE GRANDE in 1928....but if being his favorite ship to command is any indication, my late Godfather preferred the LEONARDO da VINCI...and also wonderful looking were the GIULIO CESARE and AUGUSTUS... I love em all.

Why, the REX, of course! She combined modernity with tradition, and she had a wonderful baroque look about her. And her counter stern was out of this world. Molto volupte,no?

I had no opinions of the interiors. For exteriors, the Leonardo was the coolest.
