No it's not a post about Celine Dion, so don't panic! We've not had a Titanic post for at least a couple of weeks, so I thought that I'd better put it right:

I must admit that I am constantly surprised how the legend of the Titanic endures. I’m also surprised how many books, films, TV shows, even a Broadway musical etc have been made about her. The story seems to transcend the generations.

After all it’s not a very complex story, is it?: “Big ship sink on maiden voyage – terrible loss of life”.

Even James Cameron had to invent a love story to give his movie a plot! Mind you, I do love the special effects in the film – she seems almost real!

Above: sleek Lines and superb superstucture, a British classic! (Don't do it Rose!)

Trivia: Did you know that the Movie, rather than dissuade people from taking a cruise, increased bookings

Comments on all the above please...

Yes it did motavate people tocruiseand many ships had to post guards at the very front of the ship to prevent people from doing the Titanic pose at the front of the ship

Well, this country has nearly elected George Bush over Al Gore, so Titanic increasing cruise bookings does not surprise me.

Re Titanic pose at the front of ships I spent an amusing few minutes every day on the Disney Magic watching the in house Vid cam which was trained on the front of the ship.

Yes several people every day did the pose (among other things which I will not mention). I am only surprised that they did not realise that the whole ship could see them on their television!

I recall that a least one person (or more) has fallen overboard doing the Titanic 'pose'.

On board many cruise ships the bow area is not a passenger area. This means it can be dangerous to go there: at night there are no lights at all, since the area is in front of the navigation bridge (this is a mistake in the Titanic movie), the handrails might be low, the floor may be slippery, etc.

Malcolm, are you talking about Titanic or the delectable Kate Winslet?

Paddy.

Ryndam,
I spent many hours on the bow of Statendam and on the Crown "what-ever" it was after NCL took it over. It's really nice to be there as you sail through the Islands of Hawaii. They did close it off after sunset as you can't see your hand in front of your face.

Southampton re-created in mexico!

I've particularly posted this picture so Liner fans can admire the interesting use of the 'fill in' lighting effect and 'depth of field' used by the photographer.

Did you know:

That they only built one side of the ship for the movie set?

To give the appearance of the opposite side they mirror-imaged(flipped) the film!

Every actor had two identical costumes - one with buttons on the right and one with buttons on the left. The cabin boys had two hats one said 'White Star' the other 'rats etihw'. The car on the dock side was available in right and left hand drive. The signs on the building were substituted with flipped one when required. Even the mens partings were reversed.

Some of the actors were actually computer generated.
