Passenger Ship Sinks Off Virginia, Crew Rescued
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Reuters) - A Panamanian-flagged ship carrying a crew of 34, but no passengers, sank off the coast of Virginia on Sunday after its engine room flooded, a U.S. Coast Guard (news - web sites) spokeswoman said.
Petty Officer Silvia Olvera said two helicopters rescued the crew from the Sea Breeze I shortly before the 600-foot vessel sank.
Olvera said the Coast Guard received a distress signal from the ship at about 11:30 a.m., saying it had lost an engine and its engine room was flooding.
The Sea Breeze I, which is owned by International Shipping Partners of Miami, was about 200 miles east of Cape Charles, Virginia.
``It is a cruise ship but only crew members were on board. We don't know where it was headed,'' she said.
In addition to the two helicopters, the Coast Guard dispatched two C-130 Hercules aircraft for the rescue effort.
The crew was expected to arrive at the Oceana Naval Air Station Sunday afternoon.
There was no immediate word on the sinking from the ship's owner and no immediate information on the exact cause

Coast Guard rescues 34 people Update 2
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., C-130 Hercules airplane flew over the site of the sunk passenger vessel SeaBreeze I this afternoon after Sunday's rescue of 34 crewmembers onboard.
The C-130 crew confirmed that the vessel is not a hazard to navigation in 4,300 feet of water and there were no reports of an environmental impact. The crew did find a large debris field consisting of tables, chairs, lifeboats and liferafts approximately 290 nautical miles east of Cape Charles, Va.
SeaBreeze I departed Halifax, Nova Scotia, made a stop in Boston and was en-route to Charleston, S.C., for repairs when the ship's engine room flooded.
All crewmembers aboard the vessel were safely evacuated from the ship, transported to Naval Air Base Oceana, treated for mild hypothermia and released.
All but one crewman was released.
This afternoon, Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Hampton Roads received a request from the lead investigating agency, the Panama Maritime authority, to assist in an investigation into the cause of the sinking.
