Passenger Ship Sinks Off Virginia, Crew Rescued

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Reuters) - A Panamanian-flagged ship carrying a crew of 34, but no passengers, sank off the coast of Virginia on Sunday after its engine room flooded, a U.S. Coast Guard (news - web sites) spokeswoman said.

Petty Officer Silvia Olvera said two helicopters rescued the crew from the Sea Breeze I shortly before the 600-foot vessel sank.

Olvera said the Coast Guard received a distress signal from the ship at about 11:30 a.m., saying it had lost an engine and its engine room was flooding.

The Sea Breeze I, which is owned by International Shipping Partners of Miami, was about 200 miles east of Cape Charles, Virginia.

``It is a cruise ship but only crew members were on board. We don't know where it was headed,'' she said.

In addition to the two helicopters, the Coast Guard dispatched two C-130 Hercules aircraft for the rescue effort.

The crew was expected to arrive at the Oceana Naval Air Station Sunday afternoon.

There was no immediate word on the sinking from the ship's owner and no immediate information on the exact cause

Even though the details are squetchy the "insurance scam" scenario is possible... No details on the ship destiny given to the Coast Guard, a "misterious" engine flooding, it sounds to good to be true.
But it could also mean an unfortunate disaster. At least she's out of her misery, saved from the torch of the shipbreaker and resting quietly on the ocean floor where she will became a artificial reef, a safeground for marine life.
Tim, where did you get the news?

For photos of what the Sea Breeze looked like as the Federico C.

She had 3 swimming pools terraced along the back in the old days.

According to the latest AP update this am., it said that they were having trouble with a boiler(how surprising) and then something broke free and then engine instantly started to flood. It also said ship was enroute from Boston to Charleston. There are pics of the rescue on www.yahoo.com just go to news and then search for photos, enter seabreeze. There also was a short piece of video on cnn this morning, I believe the Coast Guard video tapped the rescue, I guess not the actual sinking though, reports said the ship sank shortly after the last aircraft left the scene.

According to the latest report fron CNN, the ship might not of sank yet, but is in danger of doing so. She it said to be listing heavily. The listed the new owners as Sea Venture II. I'm not sure who that is, but wonder if it has any relation to SeAmerica, as it thought that company's parent corp was called Sea Ventures. Who knows?

Coast Guard rescues 34 people - Update 1

PORTSMOUTH, Va. –Two Coast Guard HH-60 helicopters and two C-130 Hercules aircraft rescued 34 crewmembers off the distressed 600-foot Panamanian-flagged passenger vessel Sea Breeze I after their vessel began taking on water at about 1:15 this afternoon.

In 25-foot seas and 20-30-knot winds, the first HH-60 on scene airlifted 26 survivors, and the second helicopter lifted eight people from the sinking Sea Breeze I about 200 miles east of Cape Charles, Va.

The crewmembers were taken to Oceana Naval Air Base where Virginia Beach EMS and Naval Air Station Oceana Fire & Rescue officials treated them for mild hypothermia. One crewmember was taken to Virginia Beach General for an unknown cardiac condition.

The Sea Breeze I departed Boston headed for Charleston, S.C.

The crewmembers were of mixed nationalities including Greek, Filipino, Indonesian, Nicaraguan and Guatemalan.

All aircraft involved in this rescue are based in Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.

Coast Guard rescues 34 people
Update 2

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., C-130 Hercules airplane flew over the site of the sunk passenger vessel SeaBreeze I this afternoon after Sunday's rescue of 34 crewmembers onboard.

The C-130 crew confirmed that the vessel is not a hazard to navigation in 4,300 feet of water and there were no reports of an environmental impact. The crew did find a large debris field consisting of tables, chairs, lifeboats and liferafts approximately 290 nautical miles east of Cape Charles, Va.

SeaBreeze I departed Halifax, Nova Scotia, made a stop in Boston and was en-route to Charleston, S.C., for repairs when the ship's engine room flooded.

All crewmembers aboard the vessel were safely evacuated from the ship, transported to Naval Air Base Oceana, treated for mild hypothermia and released.

All but one crewman was released.

This afternoon, Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Hampton Roads received a request from the lead investigating agency, the Panama Maritime authority, to assist in an investigation into the cause of the sinking.

I caught a glimpse of the news about Sea Breeze sinking. Fortunately, there were no passengers on board. What if this happens to the Grand Princess, Destiny class ships, and VOTS and VOTS class ships with all the passenger aboard? I wonder can the Coast Guard rescues all those people? I just hope it will never happen.
