Sydney Morning Herald. Saturday, February 3, 2001. Page 6, Travel section.Right-hand Column.

That’s section is all about Queen Mary. Informing the public about the great plans. Then about three quarters the way down:

“What will happen to Queen Elizabeth 2, the current flagship, is unknown, although Larry Pimentel, Cunard’s president and chief executive offer, hinted on a visit to Sydney last week that it maybe permanently based in the Pacific, leaving QM2 to take center-stage in Europe and the Americas.”

I reckon it be great! What’s your thoughts about this!?

It was obvious that there will not be enough demand for two Liners on the Transatlantic run. The Artist's impression of the two ships passing eah other is unlikely to ever be a common sight!

Due to her smaller size, the QE2 has more versatility to concentrate on Cruising. The old girl deserves a rest from the rigors of the North atlantic.

Of course if the QE2 is repositioned, some folks will be winners and some folks will feel like losers - as with the SS Norway!

I doubt there's enough of a market in the Pacific to support that ship. Turn it into one of the gambling ships out of Hong Hong is probably the best idea....peter

yea i think QE2 is perfect for the Pacific.
But then every time it would have to port @ Circular Quay because she cant fit under Sydney Harbour Bridge.

This will be a great idea if the QE2 does not meet the same fate as the Queen Elizabeth. I will never forget seeing the sunken, rusting hull of QE in Hong Kong.

Malcolm- Why would the Norway feel like a loser?
Gohaze-If the US and then the global economies tank, I would bet with you as well. But if the slow-down is less dramatic, the continuing growth of passengers will lead some to seek new waters. And the pacific beckons.

I saw QE2 in Sydney today, wow!
i've read alot of replys saying that QE2 is in her best shape! wow! i dont know why, but i think she looks terrible! To tell you the truth, i think even when i saw Fair Princess once, she looked better! But maybe that was because she was in Circular Quay, in which looks like a bomb blew it up or something...

I was trying to say one nations loss is another's gain:

The SS Norway used to visit Europe each summer, including UK/Southampton. When she was permanently based in the Caribbean a lot of Europeans felt that they had lost her! Now she is off to Asia the Americans feel like they have lost her. I suppose the French also feel that they lost their ship years ago? Brits may well feel that they had lost their ship to Oz?

Of course in this world of international travel and cheap flights Asia, the Caribbean and Europe are not really so far away!

Malcolm et al:

NCL lost the NORWAY - her decline is everyone's loss but her Final Voyage comes just in time if not a bit too late. Sorry, Malcolm.

And re: Mr. Pimental's comments in Sydney: he resigned today, effective at once, as President of Cunard Line, Ltd. Meaning what? Other comments I've seen so far indicate they aren't making money despite the changes that have alienated far too many of their past passengers.

Bostom,

His resignation does sound suspicious, but it's only a couple of months since his wife died and with a young family to look after it's maybe not so surprising.

We were told at the Cunard "Perth" Conference that QE2 would be 'primarily' based in Asia-Australia & West Coast USA, and join QM2 in peak times on the North Atlantic.

Chris you are right. At this time I think that there is a chance that we will be seeing a lot more of the QE2 in the Pacific area when the QM2 is built. From talk on the QE2 this is the current thinking. It is also felt that she will still do some transatlantic crossings with the QM2. I think that at this time we must realise that it is all speculation as it is far too soon for these decisions to be made, especially with a new CEO to be appointed.

I think that people underestimate the cruising public in the Pacific region. The QE2 was over sold for the Australian leg of the World Cruise. This is often the case. Australia and New Zealand do not have a decent ship cruising in this area so I think that Cunard are making a very wise decision if they position the QE2 for part of the year in this region.

Pungpui, I was disappointed to read your comment on how terrible the QE2 looked. I thought that she looked great and so did anyone I spoke to. There were many people taking photos of her day and night in Sydney so they must have liked the look of her. She also looked an impressive sight when we flew over her on our flight home. I guess that I am just a QE2 fan, but I am certainly not alone!

I'm not really a QE2 fan, but I saw her before her at Southampton, before her extensive refit and she was in pretty good shape for an elderly Lady.

Id be very surprised if she looked 'terrible' after millions of pounds were spent on her???
