I'm going to start presenting my shipcards here, one per week, on Sundays. Today it's the Ss America.

Length: 217,7 m
Beam: 28 m
Brt: 33 532 t
Built: 1940 Newport News Shipbuiding & Drydock Co, USA
Operator: United States Lines
Speed: 22 kn
Passengers: 1046
Former Names: America 1940, West Point 1941
New names: Australis 1964, America 1978, Italis 1978, Noga 1980, Alferdoss 1984, American Star 1994

When the ship was being towed to Thailand where she was going to be built into a museum or jail ship, the tow wire broke because of a storm and she was left drifting. In 06-07-1994 the ship broke in two pieces and the bow is still lying on the beach of Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands.

Great idea. I've only a few, but it may give me a reason to get a scanner...to share what I've got.
MSN is too slow this AM to get the pic, but I'll be back.
I've always loved the America, and nearly sailed her when she was ?Amerikanis of the ?Chandris Lines? I know one of you will help my aging memory.

The Chandris AMERIKANIS was the former Union-Castle intermediate liner KENYA CASTLE of 1952. She joined the Chandris fleet in 1967 and was used for cruising on the American market. She was laid-up in 1994 and there are plans to transform her into a floating hotel in the Pool of London.

Two of my favorite photos of the AMERICA, the US Merchant Navy flagship from 1939 to 1952.

Bow view of the AMERICA steaming at slow speed.
If you notice the hull, it seems to have markings on it. I presume it's the neutrality marks she sported during her civilian service in 1940 before becoming the troop transport USS WEST POINT in 1941.

A very fine view of the AMERICA at sunset, with her lights on.
