The Miami Herald reported that the Art Deco statue created for the 1935 French ocean liner NORMANDIE, which had been a fixture at the Fontainebleau Hilton for 47 years, is going back to a life at sea.

The bronze statue, called La Normandie by
sculpter Leon Georges Baudry, was removed from the hotel June 15. The figure,
once stood at the top of a grand staircase to the NORMANDIE's first-class smoking room. It was removed in New York in 1941 as NORMANDIE was tranformed into a troop transport. The figure is headed to Italy for cleaning and the addition of a marble base. La normandie will then be deliverd to the shipyard in France where it will be placed aboard
the Celebrity newbuilding SUMMIT.

Celebrity's two other new ships also have ocean liner themes. MILLENNIUM, which began service September 2000, has a specialty
restaurant with wood paneling from the 1910 steamship SS OLYMPIC. The INFINITY,
which went into service in February 2000, is dedicated to the 1952 SS UNITED STATES.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: I think Celebrities idea of building some 'history' into there mega-ships is a very clever one. I for one am tempted by the idea, where as many other newbuilds do not excite me at all!

Are any cruistalkers aiming to cruise on all three of Celebrities newbuilds?

I use to make many trips to Miami to see the ships back in the late 70's and early eighties, and I would always go to visit La Normandie in the Hotel. There was no plaque or anything to say where this great statue was from, so I had one made and presented it to the Hotel, and sure enough they posted the plaque on the wall right next to the statue. I don't know if the plaque was still there when she was taken out of the hotel recently. I was glad to hear that La Normandie will be placed on a ship again where she belongs. I always thought that it should go aboard the Norway. Then recently I thought it would be a great piece for the QM2, but I guess the Summit will do nicely. I took many photos of the statue and have some of them posted on my website at:

Just a nitpick here, folks.

I believe it is the statue "La Normandie" which is a female figure representing the Normandie Region, from the vessel "Le Normandie."

For example, remember, the Nation ("La Patrie") is "La France," but the "Paquebot" is (was) "Le France."

I believe "The Liner, she's a Lady" does not apply to the French Merchant Marine.

I await corrections to my thesis!

I believe the statue La Normandie was a female figure that represented "Normandy" not "Normandie". She is sort of leaning on the vines of Nornmandy. I don't recall the Normandie being referred to as Le Normandie??

As far as I know, the French language always has a "Le" or "La" in front of a ship's name. It's something like saying "the Normandie", I think.

Cambodge.....

You are correct. All liners, paquebots, are
"le" in French.....as in "Le France." The
statue is "La Normandie", the liner "Le
Normandie."
When is your next cruise? Happy sailing.
