Malcolm suggested posting the following...

The glamour of sea travel was often exaggerated for commercial gain, as in this publicity shot taken on board the _________________ in 19_______.

Name the ship and the date the photo was taken.

My goodness this is a tough one. Since the color of the stack is more of a bright red than "Cunard red" and I don't see any black stripes my guess is that it was taken aboard a French Line ship. So I'll say it was snapped onboard the LIBERTE during 1960.

I'll go with French Line and circa 1960 but I think it's more like the Ile de France funnel.

My guess is that it is a Union Castle ship and probably the Edinburgh Castle or her sister ship the Pretoria Castle before she transferred to the Safmarine flag as the Oranje. As to the date I would say sometime in the 1950s or early 60s. These were all great liners and a far cry from cruising today on floating appartment blocks!

The style of the Bikini could be a clue to the era?

Forget the ship. I think its a picture of Sympatico on her first cruise in 1975.

From the lack of other passengers, it's probably a private yacht.

I think it's Kenya Castle.

Werner , Normandie is impossible because she was scrapped in 1942 after the fire , I don't think there where many color photos back then and also no bikini's like that one.

Had another look and I must go along with Union Castle, although I'll plump for the Capetown Castle, circa 1960.

That seems to be the funnel of the WINDSOR CASTLE, flagship of the Union-Castle Line.
The date: somewhere in the 1960's.

Windsor Castle's funnel was rounded at the top. I'm thinking the picture's not as old as people think. The bikini style, and the good color in the pic suggest its the very early 70s to me.

Edinburgh Castle, 1972.

My guess in Edinburgh Castle around 1970. The shot would have been taken from the Tourist Class sundeck looking forward. The two air grills on each side of the superstructure ahead and the engineroom skylight all match Edinburgh Castle or her sister SA Orange, but only Edinburgh had Union Castle colours from 1966. As an 8 year old I sailed on the Edinburgh from Cape Town to Southgampton in 1970 but was too young to take any interest in bikini clad passengers.
