As of October 20, 2001 the S.S. INDEPENDENCE will probably be cooled down for the last time and the crew paid off. Hopefully a fifty foot "paying off pennant" can be found and raised on her main mast, one foot for every year of her life!

The one time pride of the American Merchant fleet will probably be sold out of country to those whom don't care about her blood line and history. What a shame; for even today, all these years after she made her maiden voyage, she is a beautiful ship and truly a work of maritime art.

I pity the Philistines whom in recent years said that she was too old to be operating and was not a good ship to go on. I found more joy riding her last February than I ever have on any of the new mega liners that I have been on. She was well maintained, the rooms clean and spacious, the food and service excellent, and a hardworking American crew that was imbued with "The Aloha Spirit" made my week aboard most memorable.

I will miss her and be a bit disconcerted that once again there will be no, atleast for the time being, large passenger ships at sea flying the stars and stripes.
No more will that deep steam horn of the INDY bellow over the blue waters of Hawaii as it did in New York, Europe and Asia years ago.

Another bit of romance will leave us, and not for the better. I pray that many others, like myself, will treasure any time that they spent aboard the INDY or her sister CONNIE and long remember, for a week of our over-burdened lives, life truly was grand.

Yet another sad day for those of us who love the classic ships. She is one of the last links to the great liners of the past. With her two tall stacks, long bow, and tiered decks leading to that beautiful clipper stern, she has the look of a true luxury liner. I'm hoping that Regal Cruises or Imperial Majesty Cruise Line might make a move to purchase her since she just had a multi-million dollar refit a few years ago. Each of these lines operate one classic ship and I had heard not too long ago that both companies were looking into expanding their fleets. As it stnds right now, this is the last day the Stars and Stripes will proudly fly over an American Liner. In this age of the giant cruise lines, several hundred cruise ships and millions of American passengers, it seems so very sad that the United States will no longer have a ship to call our own. What's wrong with this picture? Whatever her future holds, she will live on in the memories of thousands of past passengers and fans.

ss indy would need an solas
upgrade. she has no sprinkler
system and would need more
life boats if she were to
cruise offshore. i sailed on
her in 1999 and enjoyed being
on a classic oceanliner.
the 2nd officer said it would
cost too much to upgrade her.

We also enjoyed this ship.

We remember having the big cabin (cabin 3) under the bridge. We like to keep our curtains open so that we can look out the porthole. One night, we got a call from the bridge asking us to shut the curtains. They could not see where they were going.

The ship is old (unfortunately), and it would cost too much with retrofits.

I hope she doesn't meet the same fate as the Constitution.
