Here is an extract from NCL describing the Norwegian Majesty : ......The Norwegian Majesty has always been stylish and sophisticated. Now she's also been s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d - adding 110 feet that's filled with new staterooms, a second pool and dining room, a new casino, another outdoor bar, NCL's hallmark Le Bistro........... HOW THE HECK TO YOU "strecth" a ship? Any comments?

Cut the ship in two parts, put in a new part. They have done the same with Norwegian Dream and her sister ship(N Wind?)
You can see pictures of the opertation on bremerhaven werft-website(sorry, cant remember the url now)

You cut the ship in half, move the two halves apart, insert a new section between the two halves and weld the three sections back together as a single unit.

I have some pics of this being done to the NCL Dream(ward) somewhere.

The Westerdam was cut in half and 130ft. (I think) added. We were on her in 1989 when she sailed back to the shipyards in Germany. While on board, the CD had all the plans and showed them to us. I have a video showing part of this stretch. It is incredible how they do it.
Trivia question - how do they check to make sure all the wires, etc. are cut through after the cut is made??????? Learned this from the Chief Engineer on board the ship.

Hi...here in British columbia we have a large ferry fleet. One class of 7 ships built back in the early '60s was cut in half and lengthened by 84 feet 10 years later...then 10 years after that 4 of them were sjiced in half horizontally and another full deck inserted. I don't think that has been done anywhere else.

Carousel and Sundream (ex. RCI Nordic Prince and Song of Norway) were the first two ships to undergo this transformation, with plans to stretch the 3rd sister Sun Viking scrapped in favour of building Song of America in the late 1970s. Any other cruise ships?

Paddy.

The three RVL original ships, RV Sky, Sea, and Star were all stretched back in the 1980's in Germany, I think at Bremerhaven.

The 3 Royal Viking sisters [Now Black Watch, Hyundai Kumgang*, and Norwegian Star] have all been stretched from just under 22grt up to just over 28grt.

* Someone posted not so long ago that this ship was undergoing a refurb in Malta? having been bought by the chap who started Orient lines originally. Anyone any further news?

I remember when the 3 RVL ships were stretched - RVL was kind enough to send me a series of B&W pics of the before during and after - it really is fascinating.

Even more fun when your walking around a ship that has been stretched to see if you can find the seam between the parts.

There are also pics of the Song of Norway and Nordic Prince being stretched in a book published by RCCL a few years back celebrating its history.

There used to be several great pictures on the NCL web site, of the streching of 'Dreamward' and 'Windward' to make the Norwegian Dream and Norwegian Wind. They may well be there still, somewhere or a cruisetalker may have copies? They were great photos! (Renegade4 please post them or Email them to Joe, for posting)

The problem is that they add extra a section with lots of extra cabins, but do not always extend the public rooms. Thus you end up with a more crowded ship. The Berlitz guide says this very thing about these two ships!

Lots of ships have been streched! It cheaper than building a new ship!

Malcolm I would have suspected you to have had a couple of tugs secured, stern and forward, pulling in opposite directions!

Jekyll, do you still have any of those prints from RVL? and able to scan them? Would be interesting to see a couple.

Claudio,

The BERLIN was indeed stretched as well, pretty soon after her construction. Thanks for reminding me of that one. To summarize, I think these are the cruise ships that have undergone stretch jobs:

-SONG OF NORWAY
-NORDIC PRINCE
-BERLIN
-ROYAL VIKING SEA, STAR, SKY
-NORWEGIAN DREAM, WIND, MAJESTY
-WESTERDAM
-One might include COSTA ALLEGRA as well, since she was stretched during conversion from a container ship to a cruise ship.

Are there any ships I have left out?

Cheers

gohaze,

The Axel Johnson wasn't lengthened when she was converted into Costa Marina, her length has always been 174,5 metres.

The Annie Johnson instead was lengthened when converted into Costa Allegra, original length was 175,2 metres and now it's 187,7 m.

AJL...I always thought they were sisterships but not quite it seems. It makes one wonder why when they did such a big conversion that they didn't make them the same and make life easier all around with bookings etc.

Questions:

Does stretching a ship require

Larger engines for the extra weight?

Increase speed due to longer hull length?

Extra weight increase draft?

Need extra elecric, distillery capacity, sewage treatment?

compromise or improve stability?

any answers?

I recall the Chief Engineer of the Black watch telling me that they 'streched' the ship but he has to simply get more out of the existing original engines! Although she is approx 30 years old, unlike the QE2,there have been no £1.5 million refits, with new engines, for that ship!

I understand that other ships have had there engines/generators etc. upgradrd? I think it depends how big the stretch is?

Any photographs, yet?

The stretched ship will be a bit slower. It would not be economic to stretch the ship if the engines had to be changed. As this would cost not only money but also TIME. An important thing about stretching is that the ship isnt out of service for very long.

I dont know about the extra plant required. I would assume that if new eqp. was needed, they would try if at all possible to install it in the lower decks of the new section.

Stability & draft would be affected amd remedial measures necessary. The Draft might actually lessen if the new section is less dense than the rest of the ship.
