Baker was nice enough to send me the following photo of the Southampton Docks in 1966. Anyone care to take a guess at the names of some of the ships? Also, why are there so many of them there at the same time?

Click Here for a larger version.

Thanks Baker....

OK Joe...I'll start the guessing for you...
top left..Sylvania class.
next right..A Safmarine outboard of a Union Castle.
Astern of QM could be a couple of weatherships.
Across from QM...Media or Parthia
in drydock... P&O Chusan?
to the right...couple of "skin boats" Elders & Fyffe.
That should get the ball rolling!!

Hi Baker

What a fab photo, how did you get hold of it? I guess there were so many ships there because of the Seaman's strike or maybe not, I am sure someone will know for sure.

Cheers
M.

PS: I have sent Joe a photo of a ship that I want some help to identify, I haven't a clue what the name of it was so here's hoping he can get around to posting it soon and I am sure some of you guys will be able to help.

I can only recognise the Queen Mary with any certainty.

I guess it must have been taken during the seamen's strike? It is argued that their industrial action was the straw that broke the camels back, for many struggling cruise lines.

So you can guess something out of that

From top left:Franconia, Southern Cross, SA Oranje, Capetown Castle, Queen Mary, Carmania, Andes. Upper right: Caronia, Prendennis Castle. Center right: Camito & Golfito. Seaman's strike of 1966 is correct.

Goodness Billee, how did you know that lot? A great photo, but I only knew 2 of the ships.
AJL, I saw that but didn't want to let the cat out the bag I'd never have guessed otherwise. I looked up a bit about the strike and came across this lovely photo at berth 106:-

Pam

What a great photo of Canberra and Arcadia together, they look great don't they especially since the last photo I seen of the Arcadia was it being broken up. It's hard to imagine its the same berth that P&O use today and I have left from several times.

Thanks for posting it!!!

Cheers
M.

Many years ago Ranks used to have a flour mill just around that berth somewhere. We always liked going there as they only had 2 suckers and were lucky to get out 1000 tons a day. Plus no night or weekend work made for a nice long easy stay. If I remember rightly 4 of us could get a cab from the ship to the City gate for 1/6..if you went thro' it went up to 1/9. Hey.. When you were making 9 Pounds a MONTH pennies counted.

Memories!!!...peter

Hey Peter 1/6 and 1/9 is that not a blast from the past (most folks on here will not know what you are talking about) a bob and a tanner and a bob and three thrupnees.

My memory is terrible but I think that Rank Mill is still there, Malcolm or Pam will correct me if I am wrong, usually I am so excited at seeing the ships that I cannot take in the buildings round and about.

Cheers
M.

Mary...you left out the 19/11 three farthings...all same $1.99 today.

Another memory from one of those trips..it blew hard one Thursday night and one of the backspring mooring wires parted so we just put a bowline in it till morning. Thats when the Chief Officer said when you've spliced a new eye in the wire you can have he weekend off.
Well, I was good at splicing and ropework and could handle a 1"wire on my own and I had that done in no time and was on the noon train. The Mate had a real surprise when he went looking to see how I was doing and found I was long gone.
The Ashley "Book of Knots" was my bible in those days...

In my day 1/6 was the price of a pint of "black & tan", 1/3 a pint of "mild & bitter", and 1/- a pint of "scrumpy" and that is the route our drinking took as the money ran lower during the month

It was indeed the strike of 1966. In fact, I was
on board the Rotterdam returning from Rotterdam
to NYC. We couldn't believe our eyes when we
arrived in Southampton. The Rotterdam was packed
to the last birth. Many travelers had gotten a
last minute bookings after Cunard was unable to
provide a sailing for them. We even had cars
strapped down on the promenade deck [glass enclos-
ed] area. Another frequent poster here was also
on board the Rotterdam....LizB. I remember the
QE1 was in drydock. I think that was the time the
outdoor pool and A/C were added. Great photo!!

Hmm, I drive down that road from the motorway looking to my right, with half a left eye on the road Got to see the ships first! Then spend the next few minutes wondering why it's such a long way once in gate 10, down to the Mayflower, all along thinking I MUST have missed it, when the turning appears.

However, I *think* the berth before Mayflower is still a grain terminal [105?]. Perhaps Rank? I really don't think I've ever taken much notice.
Maybe the SPIN website says something.

Pam
