ssDoric was very much loved.
I don't think she was just an Oceanic passenger's surplus, as later ships were.
What got to Home lines to order the Homeric? Then Atlantic?
That money could have been used on good value second hand tonnage.
ssLewis, wishing Hanseatic had two funnels....

Actually Atlantic was ordered first, specifically to replace Doric. Homeric came 4 years later and was ordered to replace Oceanic.

I assumed Royal Odyssey made Fifteen-night inugural super gala Mediterranean Voyage on May 28, 1882 from Piraeus to London.

You assumed correctly. Home Lines handed Doric over to Royal Cruises in November 1981 after completing her 1981 Bermuda cruise season. Her "reconstruction" refit for Royal Cruises lasted from January to May 1982.

Over the winter of 1981-82, Home Lines was a one-ship operation. Atlantic was delivered in April 1982.

Royal Cruise Line introduced Crown Odyssey who made her maiden voyage on June 7, 1988 then Royal Odyssey sold to Regency Cruises and renamed Regent Sun.

Regent Sun made debut on December 9, 1988 on seven-night cruise from Montego Bay.

I loved that ship before I saw her.
Her reputation as Doric was incredible.
Her many owners made her a renditonist dream come true!
Her original HAL style funnel made her a perfect choice for the Dutch and I can see her restyled as a Little Rotterdam?
Onno would agree on that one, but she could also be a little ssFrance(or ssNorway) with two scaled down winged funnels?
In the end, she became a little QE2 for Royal Cruises

Indeed Louy, there is a visual connection between Rotterdam V and Shalom. Of course that is normal because both ships were examples of modern ship design in those days. Often design elements and features are adapted and utilised by other ship builders once they prove to be successful.

Anyway for fun I experimented with Shalom as a HAL and I think she would have looked rather smart in a 70’s HAL livery and fitted in nicely during the 70’s.

Onno

PS: what do you think of the name Hansedam!

Nice pic, onno ! PErhaps Hanzedam, or Hansadam ?

Ships of that time were almost all very goodlooking.
I think when Oceanic and Doric were both in the same fleet, apart from the funnels, they could pass for sisters.

Thanks Onno for the rendition!
Noe Shalom looks nice with a black hull!
ssHanseatic had a black hull in an old ad (with msKungsholm53)and she looked very smart.
But HAL never had the funnels painted oranje? Apart from Statendam who did not have a mid deck superstructure like my much missed Volendam/Veendam.
Doric and Oceanic were very radically different because of the lifeboats.
Oceanic would have gone well with msItalia, or the Spirit of London(wonder what would have happened if Home lines, not P&O bought it)?

Rotterdam V was the exception to the rule. Also in 50’s livery with a grey hull she had white uptakes. This was to support the look of a funnel less ship, by giving the uptakes a Orange or mustard yellow colour would not have looked or improved her perfect profile.

I figured Shalom’s funnels are more robust then the slender uptakes of Rotterdam, so they could support the orange colour in the rendition.

I assumed Doric finished her last cruise on 7-night 82 New Year's cruise arrived Port Evergldes on January 2, 1982

Oceanic begun winter 81-82 Season from Port Evergldes starting on December 19, 1981 for a series of 10 Caribbean Winter Cruises of 7 to 14 days thru March 20, 1982.

This appears to be correct. The November 1981 delivery date is what was reported when the sale of Doric to Royal Cruises was first announced. Apparently it was changed twice after that. By September 1980 it had been changed to December 18, 1981. Finally, in February 1981, it was further extended to January 2, 1982.

So Home Lines was a one-ship operation for 3 1/2 months from Jan 2, 1982 to April 17, 1982 when Atlantic departed on her first cruise.

Great picture she looks great in the '70's HAL colors. Buth without the orange colored uptakes maybe the colors as the Rotterdam 5 have in the '70's. Buth she looks great somehow she looks friendly. I would named here Potsdam 2.
She would have fit inn very well in the HAL fleet those years.

The Rotterdam 5 Uptake colors was not white whene she enterd service. They where paitened gray also paitened gray where here kingposts. Later in the '60's the uptakes and kingposts where painted white. The yellow, green/white/green funnel colors appear on the life boats.

Ben.

That is an interesting comment you made Ben. I never knew or realised the uptakes were greyish and haven’t read anything about this. I did observe in old black and white pictures that the posts of her large cargo poles were in a grey tone, but her uptakes is hard to tell in bl/w pictures. Surely they must have been in a very light grey tone and if I’m not mistaking the catwalk between the uptakes was painted white instead of the greys tone of the uptakes. Especially since after a couple of years the posts and uptakes were painted white makes spotting it more difficult.

If you have more information about it please share.

Onno
