Hi George,

CSD was taken out of service in May for supposed engine repairs. She was scheduled to re enter service in July. Yes, she did need engine repairs, but I think there is more to this story than engines. I believe there is a dispute between owners.

Anyway, CSD is still at the Port of Kaohsiung, although not listed on any published records.

Received an e-mail from the GSA of China Sea Discovery saying that they have not been informed as to when and if the ship will sail again. If they receive any new information, they will contact me.

At the moment that's all I know.
Will let you know of any new developemens.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks Ocean Liners for the post. She looks very Italian? I was wondering if all the rooms have been redecorated during the late Sitmar days or even Princess days? Mike, how was your trip?

Hi,
regarding redecoration: I have been on ALBATROS in 2001 and at least the cheaper cabin grades have still exactly the same decoration, even the chairs seem to be the same!

Sitmar did a total refurbishment just prior to the arrival of Fairsky. This put all 3 of their vessels in the same standard. The remake was a great success, and once Princess took over, very little had to be done. Great vessels, and they still rank in my top 5 of all time. If I spoke German, I would probably take a trip on Albatross, as she has great itineraries as well as being a super vessel.

My very first cruise was on Fairwind in 1982. That ship, along with the outstanding service of Sitmar, is what gave me a passion for cruising. I sailed on her twice, and Fairsky twice, before the buyout from Princess.

If anyone wants a fantastic history of these ships I recommend two books:
The Sitmar Liners and the V Ships by Maurizio Eliseo
and
The Saxonia Sister by Clive Harvey

Hi Mike,

Sitmar only advertised the Deck Locations in thier brochures. So i didn't saw the Pool on the Deck 11 in the Deck Plans

But I found the Photos below :

Below photos by kindly courtesy of Mike (Deck 9 001)

The China Sea Discovery's Prommenade Deck :

From Cruise review posted by Mike(Deck 9 001)

Deck 11 Lido Deck--

This also holds true for the astro turf surrounding the pool. But the area was still functional albeit in shabby condition.

Deck 10 Aloha Deck

There is rust to be seen at all outdoor pool areas, especially in the scuppers.

Deck 8 Promenade Deck

Brought back many memories of days gone by. Being that this deck is fully covered, it is ideal in any weather.

The teakwood decking as like the others is in need of repair, as is the battered astro turf surrounding the fairly large pool which is now not used unless you like dancing on top of the pool!!

Thanks again

Below threads from Turning the President Hoover from a CargoLiner into a Cruiseship (Page 2)

I would like to know the details of the above brochure about Size, issue date (or effective date), All Crusing Areas in the brohure and Routes with departure dates for Fairsea and Fairwind's First cruises were shown in 1972 brochure of yours.

I'd like to know about Name changes(former names & new names) of public rooms.

The dining rooms appeared similar from their Cunard days (the rest of the ship's layout and decor was all new after the 1972 rebuilding) and even retained British names. I sailed on Dawn Princess (ex Sylvania) in 1989 and the lighting fixtures in the former 1st class dining room looked vintage mid 1950s Cunard.

I assumed that Sitmar was given a refit for First class dining room had been enlarged at 1971/2 conversion because First class dining room was much smaller than Tourist class dining room in Cunard days though Fairsea/Fairwind's two dining rooms(Forward and Midships) were almost similar size in their 1973 brochure.

Any answers or detailed information on the above your threads?

I have a pre-inaugural brochure for Fairsea and Fairwind titled "crusing the pacific 1972/1973". The ships were originally intended to spend part of the year cruising from California to Mexico, then do a trans-Pacific cruise to Sydney, where they would spend the rest of the year sailing the South Pacific.

This plan was intended to build off of Sitmar's reputation already established in Australia. Sitmar was an unknown line in North America. However, this plan never materialized. Demand for trans-Pacific cruises was low, and Sitmar determined that North America offered more market potential. So both Fairsea and Fairwind were positioned in North America.

The first scheduled cruise from Sydney for Fairwind was supposed to be March 18, 1972... this cruise never happened.

ss Maritime.com wrote;

Fairsea departed the shipyard on 2 November 1971 and sailed on her first cruise in December 1971. Fair Princess’ purser, Mr John Nicoli, (Purser during the New Zealand cruise January / February 2000), sailed on Fairsea’s maiden cruise for Sitmar, with the position of “second storage master. ” Fairwind departed and commenced her new life as a cruise ship two months later.

Thanks Fairsky for the info,
Many books quoted Fairsea's maiden voyage that was in December 1971, though I only noticed Fairwind's Maiden voyage mentioned on the above date from ss Maritime.com

BTW, Do you know the exact departure dates and Itineraries for Fairsea/Fairwind?

Sitmar had renamed the Carinthia and Sylvania, Fairland and Fairwind respectively but Failand was for some reason renamed Fairsea and entered service for sitmar in the end of 1971.

The name Fairland was chosen because the ships were purchased from Cunard by Sitmar for the immigrant trade between Europe and Australia. Fairland seemed like a good name for a ship carrying people to their new homes.

When Sitmar lost the Australian government's contract to Chandris Line they decided to rebuild their newly purchased Cunarders into cruise ships, not immigrant ships. Fairland's name was changed to Fairsea... a more fitting name for a luxury cruise ship.

Between 1976 and 1978, Children's room located far aft section/portside on Promenade Deck.
Adjoining the above room, Soda A Go-Go was located in the amidship and Starboard. however this room converted to a Card room.
Two card rooms next to midship Lounge on Promenade deck were converted to shops.
The far forward section of Forward Dining room about 1/4 area converted to two meeting rooms.

I assume Sitmar did change funiture layouts in a few public rooms as well as conversions at 1984 refurbishment.
Does anyone have thought on the above matters?
