This is what I told you already some time ago. Phoenix said it will keep the ALBATROS only as long as necessary and has already looked into newer ships (several choices are being discussed - including the ODESSA :-)))
But this doesn't mean that the ship will leave the fleet already in the following weeks.

Odessa. I think that would be a poor choice owing to size and the itineraires that Albatros sails. Maybe vessels like Noordam/Holiday/Horizon ships would be a better fit.

ODESSA actually would fit well into the Phoenix-fleet. It's much newer inside, has only outside-cabins and has sailed on world-cruises already before.
The size is smaller than ALBATROS of course but this would not only mean that the ODESSA must be the only ship added to the fleet...
And of course, it needs a quite high investment to refurbish ODESSA's exteriors and make her SOLAS-conform. But it would be a fine vessel for Phoenix's marketing strategy.

Noordam would be an excellent choice.

I'm sad to see Albatros go. My first cruise was on her in 1983 when she sailed as Fairwind for Sitmar.

I though about the NOORDAM too. Another option would be the CROWN which is for sale from Actinor Shipping. Phoenix has already once tried to get the ship. Further more she is managed by V-Ships, like the ALBATROS.

I heard from engineering staff from Golden Princess that the mechanical end of the 3 original Royal Viking ships were worn right out, and beyond a mere overhaul. Their sisters from RCCL seem to suffer the same fate now as well. The person I heard it from thought a whole reengine program might be needed, along with major work on almost all systems. Perhaps this trio has seen the end of their life. Noordam and the others all seem to be doing very well at present.

I am wondering just how you conclude that this ship is a fire trap or is about to sink? Aside from her advanced age, what evidence do you have that this is an unsafe ship?

Your user name is Titanic, that ship seemed to have no trouble sinking and she was hardly old at the time!

The last Inspection Score was 96 in 2002, this is much better, than on a lot of new Ships, including those from big Companies.

The Albatros is booked well on the German Market, it is hard to get special Offers or Last Minute Deals,
the Prices are much higher than on a lot of newer and big Ships from Celebrity, RCCL, HAL, Princess and so on.

I do NOT mean Prospect-Prices,

i mean Prices which are REALLY PAYED!!!

A lot of their Passengers are Repeaters, they would not repeat again and again when they are unhappy with the Ship...

The ALBATROS is one of the few remaining classics and has lots more of charme than all the new floating mega-bricks !
Titanic, sorry to say that but you seem not to understand a lot from the business. If a ship gets old it doesn't mean that there is a higher risk and it would be good to get rid of it. Phoenix runs the ship extremely well and they have more success with this old old lady than many other companies with newer ships ! And it cause lots more work to maintain such a ship than any of the new ones and the owners, Vlasov, are a very good example for doing this job excellent. The ALBATROS is the best proof ! So no reason to talk about a fire-trap !!!

Patrick....I notice that the Brits held her for a day in Southampton back in May with some deficiences. I would think that the mention of deck/beam corrosion and even more, bulkhead corrosion could turn out to be a real problem on a ship of that age.
Once you start looking properly you can go a long way.

In all fairness that was a sanitation inspection by our VSP program here in the US and did not pertain directly to the safety of the ship aside from the sanitation/hygiene department.

That said it could be argued that most ships that are unsafe and in a general state of disrepair would probably have a whole catalogue of sanitary violations.

True, and I suppose that is rather unsettling, but then if she were that terribly unsafe surely they wouldn't have let her go after that day?

Many ships (especially outside of mainstream cruise ships) have PSC records that make ALBATROS' look enviable, and of course new ships are not free of problems either.

Wouldn't corrosion be a real problem if it existed on any ship, of any age?

At any rate it is true that she is probably quite near the end of her lifespan (indeed she's outlived the average life expectancy of a ship by quite some years, and generally if a ship is used until it is completely worn out it is very often corrosion or other age-related structural problems that does it in) but to go flat-out and say that she is a fire trap and about to sink is gross exaggeration, especially since she has a fairly clean PSC record and a very good reputation.

I think Titanic should take a look at a ship like GABRIELLE, a Bolivian-flagged passenger ferry running from Italy to Albania, which was inspected eleven times since 1999 and was detained each of those times for as long as 29 days with as many as 26 deficiencies as grounds for detention or 49 total, including such diverse problems as dirty parasites, malfunctioning watertight doors, fire alarms, fire extinguishing devices, steering gear and in one case no less than twenty deficiencies classed as "safety in general". THAT is a ship whose safety is REALLY worrying!

I don't know who this Titanic is, but he appears to be just wanting to pick a fight here and I suggest that everyone just ignore him from now on. Someone like this wants us to angrily respond to his nonsense which just feeds his need to keep p'ing reasonable people off.

And why would someone choose the name Titanic unless they had some pathological deathwish?

NY....I'm afraid you're getting outside your area of expertise when discussing things like corrosion and it's indications of problems.
I'll just mention one ship as an illustration - Pacific Sky this year.

Quite simply Doug it means that once you start to find corrosion damage you never know how far it extends until you start opening up spaces, removing equipment, etc and investigating the extent of it.

For example I recall one ship where the deck tiles in the galley were lifting, caused by corrosion underneath. Eventually, the whole galley had to be gutted as did the reefer spaces underneath. Quite a big job which started with "stick down a few tiles"

Now, start that sort of thing with tanktops, bulkheads and so on, and the next stop is Alang.

BTW...they didn't find the corrosion on the Pacific Sky until they went looking for the source of a rather large leak
