Ocean Liners, sailed on Ellinis from Australia to England back in 1974. Becasue of turbine trouble a planned 4 week trip took 6 weeks. We stopped at New York on the way which was a treat. Because of her slow peed, 14 knots rather than 20 knots, she always had soot on her decks so you had to be very careful when sitting down on deckchairs and the like. Thanks for the pictures. I believe she received the turbines out of her sister Homeric, which was being broken up at the time. Latter many of Ellinis's parts ended up in Britannis.

I read sha had turbine trouble on Apr 25, 1974 on Sakura Cruise.
So you might took on the Ellinis in May 1974 from Australia.

She had a turbine replaced by one from former sister Homeric(ex-Mariposa) at Rotterdam in June 1974.

I posted Ellinis 1974 European cruise Itineraries.

Here's a Seascape issued on Apr. 9, 1974

Ocean Liners, you are right she damaged a turbine before her line voyage to Britain. We plodded along at 14 knots but Chandris were still telling people we were to meet in Britain that the ship would arrive on time? Without Homeric being able to donate engine parts Ellinis may well have ended her active days in 1974. She was a very solid ship and unlike many latter American built ships had teak on nearly all her outside decks.

Amazing at how she differed from her near sister Britanis!
The later was more squarred off, especially at the bows.
Ellinis looked better to me, and she even had a passing "air " of ssFrance?
Anybody knows about her designer?

The three ships of Matson's Mariposa class were true sister ships, not near sisters. They were all built from the same design by Bethlehem SB at their Quincy Massachusetts yard and the differences in appearance were very minor. They were larger and improved versions of Matson's Malolo which debuted in 1927.

The differences in the appearance of Ellinis and Britannis stem from later refits (by different companies) that saw the ships lengthened and fitted with new bows.

Mariposa was lengthened in 1954 in Italy after being bought by Home Lines and renamed Homeric.

Monterey (later renamed Matsonia and then Lurline) was lengthened at Newport News, Virginia while still owned by Matson. She became Britannis after being sold to Chandris in 1970.

Lurline was lengthened and her appearance changed in a 3-month refit at North Shields after her sale to Chandris in 1963. She became the Ellinis.

Of course the Malolo (later renamed Matsonia) eventually saw her way into the Chandris fleet as the Queen Frederica, a name she had originally been give by Home Lines after serving a few years as Atlantic.

Confusing, huh?

Brian

Ellinis had 9 passenger's decks(Sun, Boat, Prommenade, Upper, Main, "A", "B", "C" and "D") insead of 6 decks(Sun, "A", "B", "C" and "D") of fomerly Lurline.
Ellinis was added extra deck above on the fomerly Lurline's Sun deck to add 22 cabins
Boat deck(ex Sun deck) was added 4 cabins and many more cabins under Upper deck(ex B deck),
However major alterlation was made to add one or two upper berth(s) in the most cabins.

Regarding Ocean Liners' statement about Ellinis having 9 passenger decks verses 6 passenger decks on Lurline. Ellinis was the original Lurline from 1931 and sold to Chandris in 1963. When that sale took place, Matsonia (formerly Monterey of 1931 and renamed Matsonia in 1957 was a different ship than Matsonia/Malolo of 1927) was renamed Lurline as that was the more popular name of the two and the name that thousands of passengers were more familiar with. I have seen several photos of the original Matson trio of 1931-32, and also of Ellinis after her Chandris rebuild, I can only see the addition of a deckhouse above the bridge and forward of the first funnel. I am confused as to where the additional three decks were added??

As I posted in previous post, Lurline's Sun deck was called Boat deck by Ellinis.
though Ellinis's "C" and "D" decks were formerly Lurline's crew's quaters.

Note: Many old ships converted their crew's decks into passenger's decks.

Ocean Liners; So that is where Chandris put those extra 800 passengers that were added when she was converted from a 1st class cruise ship into tourist class liner. I always thought that they just made 2-berth cabins into 4-berth ones. Thanks for the info!

As from Lurline's Deck plans of 1956, Matson advertised to accommodate for 722 passengers [in about 352 cabins.]
from Ellinis's deck plans of 1972, Chandris advertised to accommodate for 1642 passengers in 520 cabins.

What is also interesting is that with the near doubling of her passenger load, only two extra lifeboats were added. She seems to have had 16 boats as Lurline and 18 as Ellinis and the same goes for Britanis

Hello!!
Ocean Liners,I have a brochure from 1980 and the ELLINIS did 14-day cruises from Genoa that year.
It is a great brochure,it also has the VICTORIA,ARIADNE,ARIANE,ROMANZA,AUSONIA and I think the AMERIKANIS. I guess it was the last year Chandris had a full fleet in the med or Europe. I think the BRITANIS mostly cruised from San Juan to the Caribbean until she was put under Fantasy Cruises in the mid 80's and sailed from New York and also Miami. I think in 1981 Chandris chartered/or bought the GALILEO for the 14-day cruises from Genoa.
TCS
Post some more pics from those great brochures you have and also deck plans!!! I love deck plans!

Thats me!!!
I need to look for that brochure of the 1980 Summer season for Chandris Europe/Med Cruises.
I liked Costa and Chandris, they always had lots of ships and cruises on older more interesting ships.
Also Epirotiki had some very interesting ships and nice brochures. I especially liked the JASON and the JUPITER and ATLAS. You never knew which ships would be used and which ones would be chartered to other companies.

Epirotiki Lines advertised their ship's charterer in brochures. I have brochures for Atlas of Touristik Union International too.

I'm interesting in Greek Line's Olympia(or Caribe 1), Queen Anna Maria or Empress of Britain, Arkadia, Lakonia and Typaldos Line's Acropolis, Athenai, Atlantica. If you have these brochures, I'd like to swap of scans.

Here two pictures off the Homeric she is at the scrapyard. She was laying next to the Nieuw Amsterdam. Wich on these two pictures is fore more thene 60% scrapped.

It explain wy it took so long before she was scrapped. Infact the Nieuw Amsterdam arrived much later, she even collided with the Homeric.
The Homeric turbines where removed to be fitted in the Ellinis.

Scrapping the Nieuw Amsterdam.

Greetings Ben.

Ben,
Those pictures of Nieuw Amsterdam being
scrapped are painful to look at. She was my
first ship.
I sailed on Ellinis in 1973 on a Bahamas cruise
out of Baltimore. Her interiors were not much
by that time, but she was a happy ship and we
had a lot of fun a/b. There were many Aussies
and Brits working in the entertainment dept.
They were great fun.

I left auckland to come back to the uk on the ellinis in june 1974. As a passengerI took part in the entertainment on board. the entertainments manager was an ice skater before he took up the post. Near the equator we lost an australian lad and girl overboard. The girl was on her way over to the uk with her sister to train to be a teacher. The atmosphere on the boat changed and was never the same during that trip. I recall a girl who served coffee from a small opening in one of the lounges surrounded by cockroaches. The engine had broken and it took longer to get back to the uk.
