My baby is currently in Odessa at Ukraina Shipyard undergoing refurbishment works.
She was town by Turkish tug OCEAN ERGUN 3 years ago to Odessa. We are currently developping a program for her.

She is not in that bad condition at all. Internally she is almost like new. Her hull and diesel generators need most attention. Bridge equipment must also be updateda s well as safety-standards according SOLAS.
Air-condition, water-supply, electricity, waste-water-systems etc. all work perfectly.

Excuse me ?? An ugly ship ???
In her category she is one of the nicest ones - well at least that's what I am thinking.
She has only 13000 grt and very pleasant, round lines. Her proportions are excellent.
Another plus are her cabins - all outside, no inside cabins ! Her interiors are nice, lots of little lounges and bars. Her pool is a bit small as the open decks in the middle and the rear decks but she has a large top-deck to be used as a sport-deck.
Even balcony-cabins could be fitted in the front without ruining her lines and layout. Something we are thinking about.

There are only very few ships of this kind which are similar:
ODESSA
MACAU SUCCES
TRITON
BERLIN

While BERLIN is the newest, the ODESSA is certainly the best of the other three if you compare the comfort and pax space ratio.

I don not think Odessa is ugly (e.g. Berlin is ) , but I also never really "loved" her. Nevertheless she is now one of a few left, as posted above.

Patrick, will she be re-named and why did she go toa shipyard in the Ukraine, she was already in Italy so she could have gone to pretty much any yard in Europe?

And what colour will she be when she re-enters service!! White is nice!

Hi gpcruisedude,

no, she won't be renamed. Her name is her highest potential - many people still know her and like her the way she is.
Color-sheme will be kept similar too.
She went to Ukraine because she is an Ukrainian ship and her technical crew which is currently onboard, knows the ship from the beginning when she entered service. There is no other crew knowing her better than they do.
Like on TARAS SHEVCHENKO, the main works (painting, carpets, decks, etc.) are done by the onboard crew and they did an excellent job on TARAS.
For heavy works such as engines and underwater-hull, propellars, shaft, etc., the assistance of a yard is needed.
The shipyard in Ukraine is much cheaper than any Western-European yard and they work pretty good.

Odeassa, ugly??? Man, I never thought I'd hear this! I think she is an extremely beautiful lady at human scale! Besides structural beauty, historically she has always been equated with quality and good service. I am anxiously waiting for her return as she may be the ship of my first cruise (either her or Maksim Gorkiy, which has an ugly funnel, as someone said a while ago in the forum!!!) I guess I have a thing for ugly ladies.

Odessa was deployed in European Waters in 1982 and Transocean Tours started her first full charter cruise on December 23, '82.

Does anyone know her exact schedules in the summer/autumn of 1982 or Transatlantic crossing from USA?

Patrick; any plans on where the Odessa will sail?? And when she will return to service? I would assume she will be sailing in Europe, but you know it would be nice to see her sailing Montreal to the U.S. East Coast , New York,Boston, etc, in the summers like she did for a while back a lot of years ago!

gpcruisedude,

current plans are to employ her in Europe, Black Sea and Mediterranean. All other destinations are currently out of discussion as the product must be settled first. But I am always open for any ideas for the future.

A comment to the pictures: These show her interiors beforethe refurbishment in 1991.
Currently, all her interiors are very much in a similar style as on both ASTOR's. So she looks almost new insie becuase her interiors were not much used anymore before she was laid up in Naples.

I think the Alaska market is ripe for change! 95% of the sailings to Alaska are 7 days! World Explorer was the only one to ever sail 14 days out of Vancouver, and their are some longer ones out of San Fransisco, but None offering anything like 10-11 days out of Vancouver to see the beautiful Coast and the Odessa is small enough she could call at smaller ports and I think she would attract a really excellent upscale clientele! To see the beautiful Glaciers and fjords in Alaska are breathtaking, I sailed World Explorer 2-3 times just for the scenery and I was obviously not the only one who thought the same, as I dont ever remember The 14 day cruises as less than 100% capacity and thats with a 725 passenger ship!

So the opportunity is their and I believe someone will eventually take advantage of it!! So just an idea though!

In the end of 1980s, Sagafjord offered "Route of Glaciers" Cruises 11-day Northbound out of Vancouver or 10-Day Southbound out of Anchorage.

She featured to call at Valdez, Seward, Homer and Anchorage and cruise in Kenai Fjord Natinal Park.

When I was crewmember on Royal Princess in 1988 (OTR Ernie OTR :-)) We did 12 day Alaskan rountrips from Vancouver. Port of call were Juneau, Valdez, Overnight in Seward, College Fjord, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan.

This was a very nice itinerar, not so rushed as the rest.

I thought that Royal Princess did sail 10 Nights Round Trip from Vancouver in 1988.

Her Route was Vancouver - Juneau - Valdez - (Columbia Glacier) - Seward(8am - 12 mid) - (College Fjord) - (Glacier Bay) - Ketchikan - Vancouver while Sagafjord offered Vancouver - Kechikan - (Endicott Arm) - Juneau(Stay Overnight for Northbound salings) - Skagway - (Hurbbard Glacier) - Valdez - (Columbia Glacier) - (College Fjord) - Seward - (Kenai Fjords National Parks) - Homer - Ancorage and Vice Versa.

Reint, Did Royal Princess sail through Hecate Strait or Inner Passage(Bella Bella, Lama Passage, Granville Channel)?
